Title: Excellent read if you think your Mom might be a psychopath but you're not sure

Review: I bought the book because I thought my mom might be a sociopath but really wasn't sure.

I'd read the traits and had a good sense of what sociopaths are like from the book 'The Sociopath Next Door'. But 'control', for example, it was hard for me to know if my mom ticked that box without reading about control in the context of someone else with a psychopathic mom. I mean all parents have control of their kids, right?

Plus, the courts took me away from my Mom & stepdad when I was 10 (thankfully). He went to prison for child abuse and she fled the state before she could be arrested. Therefore, there are other things I really don't know...did my Mom lie a lot...I have no idea.

The lay out of the book was really helpful because each chapter goes into detail about a specific psychopathic/sociopathic trait. She gives just a paragraph of info on the psychopathy symptom and then the chapter details how the trait played out in her mom. After reading about how her mom controlled her, I could see that my mom also exhibited that need to control.

Aside from being informative/educational, it was also a page turner and emotionally gripping. For example, she had details on how she'd be put into situations where she would be inevitably punished regardless of what she did. It put my tum tum in knots and brought back memories of the same.

I commend the author for having the courage to speak out.

Title: A MUST read for children of psychopaths and narcissists!

Review: I run the blog daughterofanarcissistmother dot blogspot dot com and I first learned my mother was a narcissist/sociopath/etc. in 2013 (after she tried to convince me my father's physical and mental abuse of my entire childhood and beyond never happened). So I am always interested in reading memoirs about other people who've been through the same thing.

And wow. This book was worth the price! It was engaging, well written, and fascinating (and ANGERING as all get out!). I read it out loud to my husband as I went through it and we were both yelling and complaining about just how much we both hate her mother. Both my husband and I could relate to this story, as both our mothers are tamed down versions of this crazy woman. Although, some of the experiences Olivia had with her mother were exactly the same, things my mother did to me. It was eerie just how much narcissists act alike. They are predictable (in their unpredictability, though if you expect it, it becomes very predictable) and pathetic in the ways they try to get attention.

I can also see that Olivia's mother commented on here LOL Or someone who's just like her (Mrs. D. Kirk). Though I do believe it's probably her mother. Pathetic. I want her mother to know something: we can all see through you. All of you psychos and narcissists. You think you win these games, but you just don't. We know deep down you hate yourselves, which is why you cover it up with such fervor and crazy behavior. You realize you're worthless, so you try to make those around you feel as worthless as you feel. It's sad. But that doesn't make you redeemable. It doesn't make us feel for you. It just makes us detach and know it has nothing to do with us at all. It never did. It's all about you and how much you hate yourself. And with the things you do? You really should.

I am glad Olivia found her way out of that darkness. And I hope she has strong support if she ever feels the urge to fall back into her mother's web, because we all do sometimes. We all have guilt and shame for walking away from them. And sometimes we have to go back. But at least now she's knows the truth. And the longer you stay no contact, the better you'll feel, and the more armor you can build up protecting yourself from her abuse.

If you have a narcissistic mother, please read this book. It's truly a great read and you'll realize you're not alone in this. And it will help others understand just how psychopaths and narcissists really work (because so many don't).

Oh, and I'm sorry about your father, Olivia. I really wish he would have stood up for you more. But that's the way codependents work. They protect their narc spouses at all costs. Though it isn't fair to us. My parents played a game of ping-pong, each taking turns abusing me and the other not protecting me from the other's abuse (or joining in). I healed from his abuse twelve years after his death and even though he did what he did, I never doubted he loved me. He just couldn't deal with any of it. So he drank and did his own abusing. But I forgive him. I don't think what he did was okay. Not by any means. Forgiveness doesn't excuse his behavior. It just means I don't have to live with the pain of what he did anymore. As for my mother, I have no idea if I can ever forgive her. But I hope one day you'll find peace with your father, even if it's after he's gone. But that's your path to walk, nobody can tell you how to feel or when to heal.

I'm just glad you wrote this book.

Olivia, you are the voice of every child who is unfortunate to be born to a mentally ill parent. Thank you for sending the message that we are so much more than our parents extensions. I read this book in two sittings. Thank you for sharing your life to the betterment of others. You are a courageous woman.
