Review: Luther Snow (not a character in Game of Thrones, I promise!) spent a quarter century with the ELCA (Evangelical Lutheran Church in America) working with congregations helping them to see the best parts of themselves and grow into what they had the potential and vision to become. Largely this is the result of Asset Mapping, a group dynamic process by which the assembled group (either whole or parts of congregations generally, but also useful for other organizations, too) would come to see in interesting fashion what it is they have, what they can do, and where they want to go.

The Asset Mapping process is essentially a three-step process -- identifying what one has as assets, on a personal, communal, and outside level (and more), then making connections between the assets (not simple convergences or similarities, either), and then literally voting with your feet, going to those things that hold the most for you. This is meant to be used in groups small and large (from 5 to 5000, says Snow).

The book does present the system several times - first, in an abbreviated form, then in an expanded form, and finally, recapping some reflections on how it had been used in actual cases. Throughout the text, Snow incorporates his "Consultant's Journal," what appear to be excerpts from case studies done over time with different groups and congregations. Some are very short vignettes, and others are longer story and reflection pieces. At the end of the book, Snow gives various connections from a biblical perspective - the parable of the servants with the talents, the grace and abundance of the 23rd Psalm, and the story of the loaves and the fishes, perhaps the most repeated story in the actual gospels. All of these deal with stewardship and God's gifts; all of them can be reinterpreted to provide new energy and spirit to a congregational or group effort.

This looks to be a very useful process. Snow does use the term great, wonderful, interesting, and other positive terms so much it almost seemed like a sales pitch or a praise rally at first, but then he says himself (on pg 79), "I am suspicious of unbalanced superlatives. When everything is described as positive and great, I wonder if we are getting an honest and critical view." I'd appreciate in the text a few more instances where the process was challenging, as I suspect that is where many churches and organizations existing on the edge really are.

I look forward to incorporating this process and these ideas in my own congregation soon.

Review: i bought this book originally in print before luther snow ran a workshop for the 2007 gathering of the ohio conference of the united church of christ. i did not read the book for full comprehension because i was becoming more visually disabled with my ongoing battle with retinitis pigmentosa. but, i again became interested seven years later when the church my wife pastors was looking for ways to engage the congregation in questions that turned on the ideas of growth. i thought that asset mapping would be a good start. initially coming the book page on amazon, i noticed that the book was not available for kindle with which i read many books by listening. so, i hit the button asking the publisher to make this book available for kindle. and, within a week it was available. note this is the first time that has ever happened for me. so that was a good start.

now, having listened to this book twice i think i can make a useful review. the book could have been shorter. but, if you need re-enforcement of the method and why it works that should be no problem. the idea and process is useable on first glance and should not be daunting for any congregation no matter size. you don't need a degree or a concentration in the asset process to get it going and it only takes an hour to provide you with a new visionary approach to see your gits and how they can be linked. of course, i am grateful that i can listen to this book and be a fully engaged participant in this process. hopefully you can be in the same box.

i have a background in marketing, but, this book opened me up to looking not at needs but rather gifts/assets as a starting point. it is a completely different approach to strategy. and, i think a much better approach. william

Review: The Power of Asset Mapping is an amazing tool of community growth. It works from the premise that a congregation has all the gifts it needs to do what it needs to do -- we just haven't named them. It begins with one of the most enjoyable group activities I have ever facilitated: people gather in small groups and share what they love. Then it all gets put up on the wall and we connect the dots. We're currently doing this at my church, a very small congregation. and we're rockin'. The book begins with the practical and moves to the theoretical and anyone who buys the books can download worksheets from their website. I gave it four rather than five stars just because it gets repetitive.

Asset mapping is a strengths based approach underscoring the notion that within a group there are certain gifts and collectively we are uniquely designed to do x. Where X is the leveraging of our strengths for maximum effect. Asset mapping is a way to identify strengths and the collectively design strategies and/or actions based on those strengths.
