Join William C. Connery as he recounts the notable events and battles that occurred in Northern Virginia in 1861 after the firing on Fort Sumter. Beginning in May 1861, both the Confederate and Union armies assembled in Northern Virginia as politicians were deciding how and where the Civil War would be fought. Several months passed as both armies maneuvered and attempted to complete reconnaissance on the other. During this early time, the first officers on both sides were killed; Mount Vernon was declared neutral territory; the Confederate battle flag was adopted; and the first real battles of the war took place in Northern Virginia.

Title: Very extensive, but lacking in maps!

Review: The illustrations are good, the overall content is excellent.
However, there could have been more coverage of the fortification of the Occoquan River line and Manassas Junction, and I was wanting more maps. the one that is included is way too small, and not very legible.

Review: William Connery is a good writer and does a fine job of covering Northern Virginia in 1861, which really has not received enough attention in the literature. He has done excellent research and included information that I was not aware of, such as the Occoquan flag incident that starts off the book. The book's primary fault is that it is too short, but these History Press books seem like they are meant to be about 150 pages of text. As a result, some of the chapters become more like subject headings with a few unconnected stories written underneath, such as the chapter on Civil War firsts, but generating flow between some of these topics might have taken up too much space. For those with some familiarity with 1861 Northern Virginia, the absence of some topics like the skirmishing at Mason's and Munson's Hill, Lewinsville, Annandale Chapel, Springfield Station and other places is surprising and disappointing. For Ball's Bluff he primarily republished the reports from the Official Records when he's demonstrated in other parts of the book that he's quite capable of analysis and presentation. Another reviewer mentioned that the book was put together in nine months and this is where it shows. Connery wrote about the first Confederate military execution, but did not mention the first Union military execution of William Henry Johnson that happened four days later on Friday, December 13. Again, I imagine Connery was under space constraints, or else it is easier to find information about Johnson's execution, while the death of the two Louisiana soldiers is less well known.

I learned a lot of things about Northern Virginia in 1861, so don't take my review the wrong way. This book is packed with information and does a nice job of trying to pinpoint locations for the modern reader familiar with roads and highways in the area. I just wish the book had been longer because I am confident that Connery would have filled the space with additional well-researched information and been able to give his narrative a more natural flow.

Title: New and Noteworthy: The Civil War In Three Virginia Counties

Review: William S. Connery's Civil War: Northern Virginia, 1861, offers interesting and enlightening stories in three crucial Confederate counties. Loudoun County with Leesburg, Fairfax County with Arlington and Alexandria and Prince William County with Manassas have a remarkable Civil War history. Within a horseback ride from Washington, D.C. these three counties contained both Confederate patriots and Union loyalists. Appropriately, Connery begins with an event July 4 1860 in Occoquan, Prince William County.

A rally of Unionists celebrated the nomination of Lincoln; citizens of Fairfax County mustered the militia, then asked the governor for permission to suppress the flagpole with its Republican presidential campaign flag. Connery highlights the characters who will be heard from again, such as James Jackson, a proprietor of an Alexandria hotel in which he and Elmer Ellsworth will die within a few months.

Stories include: Lee at Arlington, the seizure of Alexandria, and the fate of Washington's Mount Vernon estate. Civil War firsts are introduced: first Confederate wounded and first killed in combat, the first destruction of a troop train, the first balloon reconnaissance, and the first exclusively military railroad. Battles are not neglected: Manassas, Ball's Bluff and Dranesville. The Potomac River blockade, the first exchange of cannon fire between Union navy gunboats and Confederate shore batteries at Battle of Aquia Creek are well described. Connery frequently offers the incidents in the participants own words such as Barksdale's [Mississippi] and Deven's [Massachusetts] official reports the fight at Ball's Bluff.

Connery has recently received recognition from the United Daughters of the Confederacy for his study, research, writing and public speaking and preservation of Confederate history. Civil War: Northern Virginia, 1861 is accessible to high school readers and will be enjoyable for all history enthusiasts.

Title: A very focused look at a small corner of the war

Review: There are SO many books about the Civil War that it sometimes seems like there shouldn't be anything left to write about. And yet this slim volume proves that, with a narrow enough focus, there are still stories to be told. By focusing on a relatively small area (specifically the four or so counties of Northern Virginia) and a limited time frame (1861, the first year of the war), this book gives a glimpse of what the early days of the war were like at the frontier between the Union and the Confederacy.

While this book does not really provide a single coherent narrative, it does explore what happened in the shadow of the Union capital during the secession and in the early encounters of the war. By focusing on the fine details, we get a better understanding of how divided the sympathies of this region were, and just how critical the region was considered to be in the conflict. The book does not directly discuss the first Battle of Manassas, but in some ways that helps the book, because the other elements here would likely become overwhelmed by comparison.

As someone who has now lived in Northern Virginia for more than half of my life, I know the places discussed here, and while the region has been changed radically by suburban development, it is fascinating to contemplate the events that occurred through the area more than a century and a half ago.
