Title: Great help for those dealing with psychological abuse....personally and helping others

Review: As I read this book, I kept envisioning people I have known and know to this day who had to endure psychologically abusive relationships. Mind games! Even within my own family there have been so many times I wished I understood more, knew what to do or how to help. You feel so helpless when you are forced to sit back and watch it happen. I can’t even imagine what the victim must be feeling.

In working with youth, I see all too often how it passes from one generation to the next. The inspiration and hope I get is that some of them are able to recognize it and overcome it, some even to the point of becoming advocates and inspirations for others. That is what this book does. By better understanding what is going on inside the minds of both the abusers and the victims, we can better understand how to help.

This book is not for the abusers. I wish it was. I wish I could give it to them, have them realize what they are doing and change their ways.......but seldom do they think they have a problem or would be willing to change even if they did. I know it happens, but it takes a powerful mentor in their life to get them to invoke that kind of change.

This book is probably much more likely to be used by the mentor, the professional, the family member, the close friend and others who need to understand and recognize the outward signs, understand the techniques and even the lies used by the abusers and want to know how to help. It is also for the victims who need to understand that they are not the only ones, recognize how they are being manipulated, and that there is help out there and by making the necessary changes, there is HOPE.

As I kept reading, I was hoping to find a “magic formula”- but of course there wasn’t one because there couldn’t be. Though the outcomes are often the same and the techniques used are often similar, the circumstances and the players are always different. So the guidelines the author provides for how to handle the different types of abuse are the best we can have. We just need to use them to help where we can.

I highly recommend the book.

Review: It is very relevant that the author has done thorough research, and has much knowledge in this area. It covers many forms of manipulation from common relationships to manipulation in the church. As I read the book, I discovered many key points that gave revelation with my own experiences in life, however, I didn't know how to put words to it., or see my vulnerability. The book not only includes knowledge about manipulation, it also provides tactics to use against manipulation and emphasizes how important it is to have a good support system from loved ones. Finally, at the end of the book there are illustrations and also includes patterns of manipulation that help understand how it played out in each story. Definitely will be recommending this book to many friends who have or are in manipulative relationships.

Review: I am more of a skimmer than a deep reader, but my background as a Christian and Pastor helped me focus on the chapters concerning religious organizations and skills for coping. I truly appreciated the authors balance - church and religion can be a helpful safe haven for those who have experienced psychological warfare, but it can also be part of the problem. The focus on intentions as opposed to outward appearance is especially helpful from a pastoral perspective. People and churches can be so focused on visible action/activity that they can easily be deceived by skilled manipulators. The skills for recognizing and combating psychological warfare are valuable for all church workers.

It explains not only the aspects of which it may come from or arise but also what others can do to support. It is a long road and I am tremendously grateful for the author and her point of view.
