Title: Wow.

Review: Wow. That's the first word I can think of when reviewing this book. I am a happily single Christian, but there are still so many questions I have about singleness that are never discussed in the church. Can I be honest? I have been very disappointed in the church in general for its treatment of singles and the single lifestyle. I often feel looked down upon or like I don't fit in or that something's wrong with me. But this book totally validated everything I've felt in my heart but didn't know how to express. Here's the thing though. This isn't a book that bashes marriage to make singles feel better. I love that it values BOTH. Some comparisons need to be made, but ultimately there are good things about being single and good things about being married. There are challenging things about being single and challenging things about being married. It's so important that neither marginalize the other, but it's time someone actually stood up for single Christians a little bit and acknowledged that their lives are just as important as their married counterparts.

It means so much to have someone who actually understands what it's like and addresses all the concerns singles might have. Sam talks about the needs for emotional intimacy (that's not a bad word, folks), the vital importance of friendship, how needs for family can be met as a single, the danger of becoming selfish, whether or not our sexuality is wasted (spoiler: it's not), and more. But the final chapter on the myth that singleness is easy nearly made me cry as finally someone truly got what it feels like, the hurt that can be felt, when your friends don't need you as much as you need them.

I don't like to gush, but thank you, Sam, for writing this book. I have a lot to ponder.

Review: I really wish this book had a different title and a different cover. It does not do justice to the DEPTH and WISDOM in this book. It looks like a women's blog post on Pinterest.

This book's audience is not just the single person--or that one married person trying to help their single friend. Every Christian should read this book. Parents need to read this--and read parts of it to their kids. Teens, college students, pastors, engaged couples, married couples, single women, single men, same-sex attracted Christians and literally every other person who is, has been or will be single at some point in their life: SO BASICALLY EVERYONE. But not because it tells you "how to be single", but because it tells you how to BE regardless of your marital or sexual status.

There were so many good parts, I can't highlight them all. But, the chapter on intimacy and friendship is the best thing I've ever read on the subject. (And have I ever read anything on the subject?!)

Also, the teaching on the myth of "singleness wastes your sexuality" and the truth in there about what sexuality is and WHY it is, is amazing.

AND, the Appendix: 4 Ways To Avoid Sexual Sin should be a handbook for all young people (ok, and old people!)

Really, really great book. I've always liked Sam Allberry b/c he doesn't have to do a big show-off song-and-dance about theology or arguments, he just lays out God's Word plainly in a way everyone can understand and embrace. Seriously, MUST READ.

Title: Too close to Rome for comfort

Review: The author conflates singleness with the gift of celibacy, cherry picks through 1 Corinthians 7 to support this claim, all the while ignoring Paul's teaching that because of temptation to sexual immorality and burning with passion that marriage should be pursued(1 Corinthians 7:9), unless they have the gift of celibacy. The author seems to take great pains to discourage marriage without falling into outright condemning it.

This is why I'm Lutheran, this topic is plainly and simply addressed in the Large Catechism. No need for a convoluted, long winded return to Roman Catholic thinking.

Title: The greatest book on the Theology of Singlesness ever

Review: Sam unpacks a mature theology into the sadly neglected area of Christian singleness and delivers on the truths and lies of what singleness is and what it can be. Both marriage and singleness are gifts and our collective purpose (regardless of our marital status) is the same: to glorify God and love others. As a Christian, our family is meant to be far more than just marital partners and our blood lines and this book challenges us to be far more for each other and also explores the benefits and hardships of singlesness.

Title: Trust Me, You Need to Read this Book

Review: I would give this book 6 stars if I could! Allberry paints a vivid picture of the doubts and lies that singles face and pushes them through a biblical lens to show the beauty and truth within singleness. I would put this book in the hands of every single and every married person in my church if I could, as it pertains not only to singles’ views of singleness, but the “myths” so many within our culture and church culture embrace and communicate as well.

Title: Finally! A book about the real celibate life

Review: Thank you for writing this book. Truly.

Rev. Allberry is truthful about the challenges of singlehood, like most books on the topic. But he also actually talks about the blessings, too. He gives real practical advice for both celibate Christians and the people in their lives to help single Christians lead a full life connected to the family of Christ.

He does not write as a former single twenty-something, but from the perspective of someone having experienced singlehood late into adulthood. He discusses the theology in a way that is true to scripture, and gently critiques the shortcomings of the modern focus on marriage within the church.

This book brings a truly thoughtful and sensitive perspective to the topic, and the result is a book that is an encouragement to everyone in the church community, married or single.
