Title: The Corrective I Didn't Know I Needed

Review: I am a Philadelphia native, had a pretty good civics high school course, and took constitutional law in law school. I thought I knew about the constitution. Goldstone taught me a lot about the convention and the skeleton of the document I did not know. Esp. that at one point the North was committed to assisting the South in putting down slave rebellions, but darn well wanted more tax imposed on the South to defray future governmental costs. And that Virginia, a tobacco state, had a different set of interests than South Carolina and Georgia.
This is not an easy read, some paragraphs I didn't understand, but this is definitely worth the effort. At three dollars for the Kindle version, no reason not to take a look.

Review: I had no idea how much slavery impacted the creation of the Constitution and what the founding fathers battled through to produce the document that became the foundation for America. I also confess I never knew that rice, not tobacco, was the primary product produced in South Carolina at the time and why slaves were so necessary. Goldstone gets an A+ and a gold star for both having thoroughly done his homework and for explaining things as they happened while keeping opinion out of it. He allowed me to draw my own conclusions. What made this book exceptional is the background information he provided on each of the founding fathers he zeroed in on. Should you be looking for an unbiased, non-revisionist explanation of the challenges and difficulties these men faced in creating the Constitution, this is an excellent read. And if you are anything like me, I suggest you keep a paper and pencil handy, because you will find yourself taking a lot of notes and looking things up for yourself.

Title: Excellent Road Map

Review: The author conducts an extremely vivid depiction of the trials, tribulations and on multiple occasions, near failures the nation's founders had to overcome to create this constitution. He also illustrates how ultimately when it mattered most they chose not; the dictates of ideals that ALL MEN are created equal, but sucombed to self serving pragmatism, pure economic gain and benefit. Consequently, leaving the plight of hundreds of thousands of kidnapped Africans to face nearly another eighty years of horrific sub-humanized treatment. They in fact in the country's founding constitution relegated by the most revered heroes in U.S. history as 3/5th of a human being. That designation defining the struggle for freedom; justice and equality of African-Americans from 1619 to today.

The intersection of morality and pragmatism, greed and idealism, democracy and maintenance of the evil institution of chattel racial slavery was brilliantly laid out for the reader to assess.

Review: This book is not just a fascinating account of a critical time in American history, but also one that shines a light from the past on the troubles of the present: how this country continues to disenfranchise the descendants of slaves. If you want to understand how good intentions mixed with commercial cynicism and inherent racism became ingrained in American politics, read this book right away. You can't understand today's political racism without understanding its origins.
