Title: Absolutely amazing! Can't put this book down!

Review: Even as a Black Belt I've never really been a Jiu-Jitsu nerd when it comes to the details of the history and folklore of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. That was until I started reading Robert Drysdale's Closed Guard book. Holy mole I'm hooked! I kid you not while reading this book I got the feeling like if I was the lucky fly on the wall that got to sit in on these first-hand accounts of people like Carlos Gracie Jr. discussing growing up in the Gracie family or Judo Sensei Murata discussing the difference between Jū-Jutsu and Judo which I actually found super fascinating. I'll give you an example without giving anything away. As an instructor, I often emphasize to my students that the intent which with you do your training, competing, etc.. has a profound direct effect on the likelihood of your intended outcome. Sensei Murata's discussion of Jū-Jutsu's explicit intent vs that of Judo is an important one I wish all students understand in order to keep the spirit of Jū-Jutsu alive through the modern versions of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Thank Robert Drysdale for this amazing read and I can't wait for the documentary! Everyone needs to get this book now!

Title: Opening closed guard is a pass that works!

Review: Professor Drysdale and his Crew have done a champions job with their Documentary’s companion volume on the history of what is called Gracie Jiu-Jitsu or BJJ. The globetrotting efforts of Maeda, Ono, Omori of Japan and the early Kodokan are followed by the Grappling historians as they interview Experts in Japan, Brazil and the United States. This book does an excellent job of contextualizing the known history of Maeda and the Gracies and including and educating often lost names that contributed greatly to their Jiu-Jitsu efforts.I hope this is the first of future efforts as this goldmine has barely been scratched.

Title: Answers few questions with no real direction to what was being "opened".

Review: I was pretty disappointed with the book. If this is the "expanded" version of what is going to be in the film, then it is going to be a very short film. While I don't doubt that valuable information was obtained during the interviews, the information didn't make it into the book and I doubt it will make it into the movie. Most of the questions were asking the interviewee to introduce themselves....but the author already did that in the previous paragraphs, so there was a lot of repeated statements. If this book was intended to "expose" the Gracie family as not the originators of BJJ or Jiu Jitsu or whichever martial art it does not achieve that intent.
The book does bring some decent information about the early days of the 20th century and how Jiu Jitsu was brought to Brazil and some other characters that were important in the development of the art form. There was unfortunately a lot of confusion created with some of the interviewees direct or indirect accounts of the history of BJJ. There was no concrete evidence presented that Helio or Carlos intentionally lied, cheated, stole, fabricated or exaggerated any facts about their story and history.
