Title: Listening to this fantastic story frees me to do other tasks.

Review: The story is good because of course it’s by Diana Gabaldon. I’ve read all of the books, this is my 4th time! I like listening because many of the Gaelic phrases and names I don’t know how to pronounce so it’s nice to hear them instead of guessing what they sound like. The reader is excellent. I would recommend this series to anyone and everyone-I know many man who love the adventure and the history. If something is presented of the events taking place in the time period-riots, plagues, uprisings, political happenings, and more-it happened, I’ve checked. Even the most obscure thing that only a historian studying that time period would know, happened. Love, lots of steamy sex, humor, tenderness, violence, adventure on land and sea, magic, believable characters, this series has it all. If you’re not a reader, if you spend many hours in your car driving from call to call, if you’re a busy homemaker, anyone who doesn’t have time to sit and read, get the audio. I have the book too.

Review: I have been reading this series and saw the first two seasons on Starz - loved that, as well as the books leading up to this one. I have not finished this one but must say I am feeling bogged down by too many details, characters and side-stories. I feel ALL of the Outlander books could use a good bit of editing to pare them down. I think much could be edited out and still have wonderful stories. In The Fiery Cross, I find myself skipping through bits because it is just too, too much sometimes! I do feel Starz has done a terrific job with the TV series and the tendency to get frustrated when things drag because of the excess detail in the books won't stop me from reading them. I just don't understand why an editor wouldn't automatically cut out some of the detail and condense the length. Even holding the books is a chore because they are just too dang thick for comfort! (part 1 and part 2 would be an excellent idea!) That being said, I may change my mind as I get further into the book; have read only the first one-quarter. And don't get me wrong: I AM a fan!.

Review: I am a very well-read person. (I was going to say man, but in today's woke culture, genders have become obsolete.) We're talking thousands upon thousands of books. Yet I have never--ever--read a 1400+ page novel. Until now, when I just put down THE FIERY CROSS, the 5th installment of Diana Gabaldon's amazing Outlander series.

And I enjoyed every second of the experience.

Gabaldon continues the story of the budding settlement at Fraser's Ridge--of Claire and Jamie Fraser, of newly-arrived time travelers Brianna and Roger MacKenzie, of adopted family members Fergus and Marsali. Day to day life was often difficult and harsh in the North Carolina mountains, yet the Fraser clan found a way to persevere. In order to maintain his grant of 10,000 acres from the governor, Jamie must form a militia of settlers to fight the Regulators--a band of fellow settlers opposed to the government's taxes. Fortunately, the "fighting" is minimal, yet the Revolutionary War is looming, just three years distant. Which prompts the question: With war on the horizon, should Roger and Bree go back through the stones--provided toddler son Jemmy can also travel? And while the question is pondered, is there another threat looming? (Stephen Bonnet, anyone?) This question is answered at the very end of this enormous story.

Title: These books are over 1400 pages and are SO very hard to hold open while I read.

Review: The picture of the front cover doesn't prepare you for the fact that each book is very thick and VERY hard to hold and read from. My hand cramps up just trying to hold them open. We love the TV series, and I thought this would be awesome, but truly it's just WAY too thick. Honestly, if she didn't spend so much time talking about handing the babies from one lap to another, babies peeing/pooping, or changing and washing the diapers, etc., the book could be thinner. There is an inordinate amount of time/wordage spent on details that are not only unnecessary, but add nothing to the story. This wouldn't bother me so much if the book wasn't 1450 pages long and nearly impossible to hold. I'm keeping the one that I've read 25% of (Book 5), but I'm returning the last 3. I'd truly suggest increasing the surface area of the pages (larger book dimensions) in order to decrease the number of pages. I've never given up on a book because of it's difficulty to hold, but there's a first time for everything. (Take several paperbacks and put them together until you get about 1450 pages and just look at how thick that really is.)

Title: The fourth Cross by Diana Gabalon

Review: This author is truly skilled forming characters that become real in their humanity, and paint such detailed pictures in words that it takes your breath away, makes you laugh or reduces you to sobs.
I love the historic detail and can see how the actions of the Scottish clans and their tendency to make whiskey led to moonshiners, also the the ritual of the fury cross to gather the clan could after many many years morph into the ritual used by the white hooded night riders that terrorised the south.
I love this series and can't wait to read the next book and watch the next season on TV.
