Title: A Member of the Tribe Samples Christianity: Funny, Honest, Enjoyable. And a bit sad

Review: I often heard Jerry Seinfeld narrate parts of “My Jesus Year,” an Orthodox rabbi’s son’s witty retelling of his year searching for God from the smorgasbord that is Christ’s church in the United States. I’m not sure if that’s abhorrent to my Jewish friends, who would beat on me for succumbing to a stereotypical representation of American Judaism. But hearing it in Seinfeld’s cadence did enhance Cohen’s humor. The book earned many a chuckle.

Reviewer’s disclaimer: I grew up Catholic, but these days you’d identify me as a conservative Presbyterian. I’ve been inside a synagogue once in my life, and that was for my childhood friend’s Bar Mitzvah.

Cohen cares about people, about our existence, about ultimate meaning. He tells us early on that Judaism left him feeling empty and unfulfilled. And that the church right across the street from his childhood home was always beckoning, tempting. As a young adult, he decided to give himself over to the temptation for one year, hoping Christians might teach him something about spirituality.

If this sounds like too heavy a theme, don’t let it stop you. Cohen is endearing in how he describes a journey that will take him to a variety of Christian worship services and venues. There will be faith healers, gospel choirs, a Trappist monastery, a devout Pentecostal grandmother (on his wife’s side); a Roman Catholic confessional; an Episcopal cathedral. Even a Christian wrestling show. And the list goes on. Cohen diligently sampled the Christian faith during his year, though dogged by guilt that he was eschewing the faith tradition he was born and circumcised into. That qualifies as bravery.

I liked that Cohen is somewhat coy in telling us about his year, as to where the journey leads him. I wanted to see how it turned out for him, and he does tell us where he lands in the final chapter. I wanted to see what he learned. He learned some really good, true things about pursuing a relationship with God.

I was glad that Cohen could see through the machinations of the faith healers and to understand that their shtick has little to do with authentic Christ-worship. I was also glad to hear him talk about his confessional experience as one in which he experienced a true sense of cleansing. I loved his openness to experience what was so foreign to his upbringing. There was a lot of other things in the book that would make a Christ-worshipper like me, glad.

So why is this book maybe a little sad (depending, admittedly, on one's perspective)? There is no mention of the essential difference between scripturally-defined Judaism and scripturally-defined Christianity: the Christian concept of an already-fulfilled Messiahship with the yet-to-be-fulfilled Messiahship of Orthodox Jewish faith. Is this a commentary on the state of Christ’s church in the U.S., that it’s gotten so far from preaching the gospel to people who are seeking God that Cohen never got to hear it? Or does it speak more to Cohen’s decision to avoid tackling the essential difference head on, and instead spend a year merely dabbling in the trappings of religious practice? Either way, the lack of contact in this book with the root of the difference between the two faiths, makes me sad. I’d love to hear Cohen wrestle with that.

But I am not sad that God put people like Benyamin Cohen on the earth. I found a lot to love and respect about him – wondering if he sounds like Seinfeld in person, aside. This is a book that any person who takes their relationship with God seriously, will come away with something important to think about.

Title: What a wonderful memoir

Review: What a wonderful memoir. I have had similar experiences to some of his, so I have a real appreciation for this man’s plight in life. I loved the conclusion he came up with that states “that all these different religions have more in common than they do have differences.”

I thought he did a great job with the introduction of this story, but I must admit that I was a bit turned off with his understanding and appreciation of the Christian sects that worship God or should I say Jesus with loud preaching and loud music like Jimmy Swaggart. I think Benyamin got caught up in all the excitement those kinds of services create, and he saw that part of this could be used at his Synagogues, as a marketing tool, to promote more attendance.

Many parts of his story were hilarious. Benyamin was specially puzzled by all the rituals and rules his Jewish faith had to follow and here’s a few examples he shared:
“Make them tie their left shoelace before their right one. Make them wash their hands twice on the right and twice on the left anytime they eat a piece of bread. But not cookies. Or fruit. Just bread. Oh, and make them recite a specific blessing—in a foreign language—before they eat anything. And also when they’re finished eating. And speaking of blessings, let’s make them say one every time they see lightning. Hear thunder. Glimpse a rainbow. See a dwarf. Put on new clothing. Smell a spice. Cross a river. Yeah, and make them say a blessing every time they go to the bathroom. How about for one day each week they can’t shower. Or use any hot water. And for nine consecutive days each summer they can’t do laundry. And one day a year they can’t sit on a chair. They can’t use cars on their Sabbath. And if it’s raining, they can’t carry umbrellas. Forget umbrellas. They can’t carry anything. No umbrellas, no purses, no books, no strollers, nothing. Not even a key to their house. Prayers can’t be in English.”
So, you can imagine his frustration with all these rules, and this is just a few.

I love the fact that he spent time with Mormons, Catholics, and even visited a Trappist monastery in Conyers Georgia. I too have done the same and reading this book brought back all kinds of memories and also added many new perceptions to my understanding of these faiths. I can’t say enough good things about this story. It was thought provoking and enlightening as well. I’ll give this one 5 stars and hope that Benyamin writes and shares more of his life with us. It’s a must read.

Title: This book made me grateful to be a Christian.

Review: This book is the story of a Jew who decided to visit various Christian groups and gatherings over a year and how it helped him to reconnect with Judaism. It helped me as well as I learned more about Judaism through his own story. I have a better understanding of how Judaism is not just a religion but akin to a way of life which has rules for how you live it which cover almost every aspect of your existence. As a Christian, this helped me appreciate how Christianity is different from Judaism in ways which I now better understand. The one thing which I did wonder about when reading the book (unless I just missed it) was the lack of apparently any contact with the Jews for Jesus group. I would've thought that they could have given him more of an insight into the relationship between Jesus and Judaism than attending Baptist, Catholic or Pentecostal services. But, that's me.

Title: Wasn't what I expected

Review: When I downloaded this book, I thought it was a totally different book I read a review on in Relevant Magazine. Then I forgot it was on my kindle for two years. It was not anything I expected. At first I was going to quit while I was ahead after he compared Charles Spurgeon to Rick Warren. When I realized I paid $2 for it, I pressed on and I'm glad I did. Although I didn't agree with everything Cohen said, he's a good writer and it was thought provoking. I also learned a lot about different going-ons in the South. Who knew there was a monastery not far from here? Once you start reading his journey, it's hard to stop.
