Dream of Orchids by Phyllis A. Whitney Book Review

Rating: 2.0 out of 5 stars
Title: Negative review with spoilers, spoilers
Date: Reviewed in the United States on March 15, 2019
Review: I cannot recommend this book and will never read anything else by this author. If this wasnโ€™t the worst constructed โ€œmurder mysteryโ€ Iโ€™ve ever read, it was certainly the worst written by an apparently respected author. You may take my negative opinion as is, or you may read on, knowing there will be spoilers.

I read mysteries, and imagine others do, too, primarily in hopes of โ€œsolving the case.โ€ For that reason, I avoid putting spoilers in my reviews and also avoid knowingly reading reviews (of mysteries) that include them. In the present case, however, I was dissatisfied with my original review and realized I could only explain how truly bad this book is by letting the cats out of all the bags. So:

1. The heroine/narrator/amateur sleuth s the worst detective ever. She has no apparent knowledge of human psychology, and also no intuition. She spends a great deal of timeโ€”it feels like half the book, but perhaps itโ€™s no more than a third of the bookโ€”explaining her suppositions and feelings about all the other characters (the โ€œsuspectsโ€), which, of course, means an entire third of this book (which feels more like half) consists of โ€œtelling,โ€ rather than โ€œshowing.โ€ The reader doesnโ€™t see or hear the suspects so much as listen to the narratorโ€™s misleading theories about them. And, since everything the narrator supposes about any of the suspects will turn out in the end to be wrong, itโ€™s fair to say that this author misleads her readers at every turn, and not by subtle omission or clever misdirection, but by force feeding us a whole lot of red herrings. As proof of that, in the end, the narrator not only bonds with one of the previous, major suspects; but actually marries another. And, while itโ€™s difficult to swallow that characters who, for hundreds of pages, have seemed fully capable of murder, are now to be embraced as pussycats, it helps that all the characters are so shallowly drawn that, in fact, the reader never had any idea what any of them might have said or done next anyway. In other words, the poor characterization seems deliberate: the characterizations are vague because makes all the characters unknowable; and that means that any of them might flip from โ€œbadโ€ to โ€œgoodโ€ (or vice versa) in a heartbeat. These are not people, they're devices.

2. The crime in this novel isnโ€™t solvable by the reader, because it turns out to have been a crime of opportunity, without malice aforethought. Accordingly, none of the narratorโ€™s sleuthing leads anywhere. In fact, the perpetrator simply confesses one day to the sleuth, for no apparent reason, which makes most of the novel waste of space: the sleuth could as effectively have sat about doing nothing at all, simply waiting for the killer to confess. Without the unexpected and even inexplicable confession, the case could never have been solvable, by anyone.

3. The killerโ€™s motive is revealed in the end to be inexplicable, as well, since the killer proves simply balmy. So, again, none of the sleuthing leads anywhere; all of the narratorโ€™s tedious thoughts and suspicions against everyone prove once again worthless. The reader is simply expected to settle for a case of โ€œjust nuttiness.โ€

4. Finally, the crime is not believable: the victim was forced to bleed to death, by being prevented from obtaining a bandage. It really bothered me that the victim didnโ€™t, for instance, take off her blouse or sweater, and use that at least to mitigate the bleeding. (In fact, people who slash their own wrists, deliberately, are as likely to have to live on, with scars, as successfully to kill themselves.) But this victim evidently just stood there, bleeding out while pounding at a stuck greenhouse door. But even thatโ€™s not the worst of it: whatโ€™s worse is that the victim was locked, again, in a greenhouse: the killer used some kind of a metal device (which I couldnโ€™t quite picture, since the author never described it) to prevent the victim from opening the greenhouse door, to run for a bandage and to call for help. Well, as everyone knows, the walls of a greenhouse were made of glass, so all the victim ever had to do, to escape, was smash a big hole in any wall. Since the greenhouse was full of potted plants, it would have been childโ€™s play to hurl a dozen or so potted orchids through any wall, and then run out and save herself. The victim's behavior was simply too passive to be credible.

Title: Fantastic book
Date: Reviewed in the United States on May 16, 2018
Review: This is one of my favorite novels. I enjoy the old Gothic Romances but this one stands out to me as being more delightfully colorful and exotic, with vivid dreamlike images, a strong sense of suspenseful dread, characters to bond with, realistic events, and a complex, unpredictable plot. Highly recommended.

Review: Love Phyllis Whitney books! Great mysteries and always interesting characters good and bad. I already have many of her books from around thirty years ago. Now I have been able to buy around 15 of them on my tablet for $1.99 each. Great bargain!

Review: Loved this author when I was younger & didn't find all these books in a book store back when the later novels were published. I'm glad I can find them now. This is still one of my favorite authors & I will be watching for more by her.

Title: Nice book

Review: Nice mystery with not foul language, and a level-headed woman protagonist. Whitney writes a lot of YA fiction, i understand, and this would be okay for teens as well. But, I enjoyed it anyway!

Title: A good old-fashioned novel
Date: Reviewed in the United States on July 7, 2018
Review: Somewhat dated and formulaic, but a good mystery. Liked the setting of Key West, and the fact the protagonist took her time falling for the male romantic interest.

The facts about diving for treasure were accurate and appropriate.
