Growing up in an affluent Jewish family in Plymouth, Massachusetts, Dick Waterman (b. 1935) was a shy, stuttering boy living a world away from the Mississippi Delta. Though he never heard blues music at home, he became one of the most influential figures in blues of the twentieth century.

A close proximity to Greenwich Village in the 1960s fueled Waterman's growing interest in folk music and led to an unlikely trip that resulted in the rediscovery of Delta blues artist Son House in 1964. Title: A great unsung story of a key figure in the resurrection of blues in America.

Review: My distant experience with Dick Waterman completely paralleled everything I read in this fascinating and wonderful book. But, I learned so much more about the man and his experiences than I could have imagined. “A Life in Blues” was enlightening, entertaining, and educational, all in pretty much equal measure. Especially, in these times, as we go through American racial convulsions again, learning more about Dick’s dedication to the Black cultural experience was a revelation.

I had a distant back seat to working with Dick with one of his friends and clients in 1971, when I recorded my first LP, "Mississippi Fred McDowell: Live in New York,” Fred’s last album. My partner, Tom Pomposello was the bass player on the gig (which included Dick’s latest client, the as yet unrecorded Bonnie Raitt, as the stellar opening act) and he handled all communications with Dick.

Everything went smoothly, Dick was exactly the guy you can read about here. Quietly and clearly in charge, protective of both of his artists and the obligations to the venue, I watched with great awe and respect how things should be done.

Bravo to Dr. Turner for finding, and then sharing, a great unsung story of a key figure in the resurrection of blues in America.

Review: This is a fascinating book about a fascinating man, and all the wonderful musicians that he helped along the way. Son House, Mississippi John Hurt, Fred McDowell, Junior and Buddy, etc. Absolutely great stories, and a hard book to put down. Don't miss his book of photos, Between Midnight and Day.

Review: Enjoyed this book very much. Well written and great fun to read. Many historical people given a personal recollection by someone who was involved. Great stories about Mr. Waterman’s run in with union stagehands, flying with Jr. Wells at the controls and many other memories. Highly recommended, if you like music and history this is a book you will enjoy.

Review: Dr. Tammy L. Turner's five year quest has finally provided us with an inside look at the life of Dick Waterman whose rediscovery of the Delta musician Son House in 1964 (with Phil Spiro and Nick Perls) launched his career as the premier manager and agent of Son, Skip James, Mance Lipscomb, Robert Pete Williams, Arthur "Big Boy" Crudup, Buddy Guy & Junior Wells, Otis Rush, Mississippi Fred McDowell, Bonnie Raitt and many others.. Dick is a gifted writer, photographer and fortunately an excellent raconteur.

Dr. Turner's deep, personal research leads to interviews with Eric Clapton, B.B. King, Taj Mahal and countless other major figures who witnessed the resurgence of interest in the Delta Blues beginning in the early and mid-sixties. They praise Dick's skills in bringing these unique and almost forgotten musicians to countless colleges, clubs, Blues Festivals and the audiences at Newport in the early 1960s. Perhaps more importantly, they praise Dick’s humanity for his dogged protection of the rights and treatment of the musicians under his management.

Dr. Turner allows a good portion of the years of recorded personal interviews with Dick to speak for themselves. Dick's ability to weave a story is compelling and it really brings to life the wonderful one-on-one experiences Dick recalls from years of traveling on the road with the Blues giants.

Congratulations to Dr. Turner for her masterful biography. It reads beautifully and every page is filled with one great fact and story after another that will interest any blues fan. I loved reading it.

Review: Dick Waterman's is a life well spent, in support of some the most important, affecting and least-known musicians in the United States. The older bluesmen who were re-introduced to a new fan base in the '60s and '70s owe a lot of their new exposure to Waterman, and hundreds of thousands of fans owe their good luck at encountering people like Son House, Skip James, Fred McDowell and Mississippi John Hurt to him too. This account of his life and times is entertaining, well told, often funny and touching as well. Anyone who has an enthusiasm for real blues will have a great time with it.
