Review: I originally left a 1 star review, but wanted to update this now that I have completed my study and earned my CCNA Security. While the CCNA Security exam is going away as of February 2020, I still felt it worth adding this information for anyone wanting to squeeze this exam in.

To start, this should not be your only resource while studying for the exam. It covers much of the information in pretty good detail, but skimps on the information added after its publishing. The latter information is extremely crucial to this exam since it covers 802.1x, FirePOWER, and Private VLANs. If you are going to only use this guide, make sure you go to the book's website and download the updated material.

The information covered by the book is presented fairly well, but does have some organizational issues and editing mistakes. Looking back on the book much of this can be overlooked by "seeing the forest" regardless of the trees, but it can be frustrating while working through it.

There is quite a bit the book does not dig deep enough into, however. ISE is only referenced and not discussed in much depth. You are not expected to be an ISE power user for this exam, but there is quite a bit that I feel should have been included. The updated material is barely dug into as well in the additional download. 802.1x Is mentioned, but then links to the Cisco page about configuring it. I supposed the information is still "presented", but I feel all of the material should be presented in an "Official" guide (either in print or electronic updates). I appreciate the vast knowledge available on Cisco's site, but these guides are not exactly cheap.

TL;DR
I am giving this book 3 stars because a good amount of the material is present and covered, but there is also quite a bit that is not discussed. If you are going to used this book, do yourself a favor and use the "31 Days Before..." book as well. It is a phenomenal guide and provides a good amount of detail that is missed in the OCG.

Title: Worst Technology Book I've Ever Read

Review: I apologize for the harshness of the review that is about to follow, because I'm sure the author spent many long nights creating this book and was sincere in his attempt to deliver a quality product. But, to put it very flatly, this book is terrible and is hands down the worst technology text book I've ever read. I feel like I would be doing a disservice to potential buyers if I were to frame this in any other light. I'm also quite surprised at the multitude of positive ratings this book has garnered. Having spoken with several people who have also studied for and passed the CCNA Security, I've found that not a single one has had good things to say about this book and the overall response has been largely negative.

To start, this book was very clearly not written in the order that it is presented. In chapter 2, he refers to the management plane without having ever explained what it is. In chapter 3, he talks about how you can setup a method list without ever first explaining what a method list does. Later in chapter 3, he states "as done previously, comments about each of the commands and what their purpose is are included" which is just embarrassing because up until this point of the book he has not shown a single command. I've no idea what he might be referring to. He then goes on to mention how this might come off "as a review" due to the previous chapter. But considering that this is the first time the topic has been discussed, I would find that highly unlikely...

Another glaring issue is the numerous references to chapters and examples that are not in the book. At one point he mentions, "Hashing is a method used to verify data integrity. Earlier in this chapter, we looked at a method for verifying the integrity of a downloaded IOS file from Cisco, and the method that was used was a hash." False! This was NEVER done in the book.

Another example, on chapter 5, page 91, he states that "you now know that data integrity is a function of hashing", yet he has not once introduced what hashing is or that it was related to integrity. The sentence feels so out of place that I'm positive this book is just a rewrite of the CCNA Security 640-554 Official Cert Guide by Keith Barker.

I can forgive a bit of book confusion and bad editing, but the worst issue and the biggest failure of this product is the incessant coverage of CCP. CCP is everywhere in this book. There's easily 20+ examples all focused on CCP with screenshots, detailed descriptions, step-by-step instructions, etc. This begs the question: Why?! There is no CCP on the 210-260 version of the CCNA Security. It's very clearly been removed from the objectives with the transition from the 640-554 exam to the 210-260 exam. How does an "official course guide" get released that covers blatantly outdated information? Even worse, this makes it clearly evident that the authors have not taken the 210-260 version of the exam or even read the objectives. To further emphasize this point, the 210-260 objectives require that you understand how to implement routing update authentication on OSPF. But, the book provides examples for OSPF, EIGRP, and RIP.

This leads me to my next point. This book comes in at a hefty 608 pages and yet somehow manages to be simultaneously too light on information to be useful and too heavy on information that is completely irrelevant to the CCNA Security 210-260 (CCP and secure routing being just a few examples). There is absolutely no way you could use just the official course guide and pass this exam. The required topics are just simply not covered or are covered, but not in enough detail to be useful.

Unfortunately, I cannot recommend this book in any capacity if your intent is to study for and pass the current CCNA Security exam (210-260). My recommendation would be to take the "Implementing Cisco Network Security (IINS) v3.0" On Demand E-Learning course from Cisco if money is no object. The Boson "210-260 IINS CCNA Security Practice Exams" are also very beneficial and the explanations provided for each question are invaluable. I've also heard very good things about the newer Cisco book by Patrick Gargano, "31 Days Before Your CCNA Security Exam: A Day-By-Day Review Guide for the IINS 210-260 Certification Exam", although I have not read this myself.
