Title: The Life and Times of Bob and Schizophrenia in America

Review: Thought this was a great book that showed the confusing and crazy times in the life of Bob, a relative of the author. A revised autobiography, told as a revised biography of Bob by his relative -- every other chapter being a dive into verifying events by Sandy, research, hearing from others about how true Bob's memory was, etc. -- of a man's struggles as both a teen and adult with the mental health system.

Reality is a weird, funky thing. Many of the stories he tells seem unreal, but turn out to have definitely happened. I think it was great that Sandy did so much investigation into understanding how "schizophrenia" is perceived, it's history, psychiatric survivors, families, patients, victims, critics, and more. A well-detailed look at things, that I think people could really benefit from reading.

An interesting aside is that, at one point, Bob has the following experience:

In the sky, he could make out some stars.
He looked down at his dog, who sat patiently by.
He looked again at the sky. Something had caught his eye.
An airplane?
He looked and--there!--he saw it again.
He couldn't tell what it was, but it was moving.
He kept staring, trying to decide whether his eyes were playing tricks on him, but the more he focused on it, the more he was certain there was something there, something blocking out just the stars at first, and then a stand of clouds, SOME DARK SHADOW OF SOME CRAFT:
It was coming closer.
Couldn't be an airplane.
Bob squinted and as he did a ray of energy hit him in the head, throwing him onto the dust.
He blacked out.

This reminds me of Phillip K. Dick, as he wrote a fictionalized hash-up of his own personal experiences (the VALIS trilogy) relating to a pink beam he believed had been shot at his head from space (in real life, in 1974). He wrote a collection of notes and theories that ended up posthumously compiled into a book called "The Exegesis of Phillip K. Dick." Strange stuff. He was also regarded by people to have had schizophrenia. Just an unrelated side note!

I would definitely recommend this book to those unfamiliar with what the impact of a schizophrenia diagnosis can have on the life of an individual in Western society. A well-balanced look at the struggles of the mind, and also the struggles of those wrapped up in the system. Especially involuntary treatment. The chapter "You Can Call It Anything" (pg. 93 - 101) is a great section on its own, taking a look into what something like "psychotic paranoid schizophrenia" even means.

Title: Beautifully written, totally unique work of nonfiction

Review: I've never read another book like this. It's the story of mental illness in America and the ways in which schizophrenics are ignored, mistreated, and forgotten alongside the firsthand account of a man experiencing mental illness himself. But it's also the story of Sandra Allen, the author, coming to terms with how mental illness has affected her family and what her "crazy" uncle's life has really been like. Read this book! You won't regret it. It's beautiful and expands your understanding of the world in important ways.

Review: Sandra Allen’s A KIND OF MIRRACULAS PARADISE: A TRUE STORY ABOUT SCHIZOPHRENIA is eye-opening. As the author points out, schizophrenia is a disorder that many do not know much about and what they think they know is based upon fear. Fear of the unknown. Of old stigmas associated with it and of the people they think mostly fall victim to it. While she carefully describes the history of schizophrenia, the medications used to treat it, and what life inside the mind of a schizophrenic is like, some myths are dispelled. Most of all, what I gathered was that her uncle, whom the book is about, was able to tell his story through a manuscript that he shared with his niece. These pages are woven into the book along with her observations and background about her family.

There is nothing sugar-coated in the book, nor would you expect it to be. Allen’s honesty about her concerns even writing it, and how those changed once she delved in, help to further understand how she was able to put herself slightly more at ease, perhaps to empathize, and get to know her Uncle Bob through his pages.

If nothing else, the book gives a glimpse into a world in which few will ever know the depth of pain or misunderstanding that most of us will feel in our lifetime, but the necessary tools to find compassion for those who have a different way of processing information.

Review: Giving 4 stars only because I appriciate the authors effort. Cannot get myself to read even one full page. I have ADD and the way this book is written made it hard for me to keep going... you can definitely tell it's not written by a professional. I typically can get lost like we're all supposed to, just not with this particular book.

Review: I read A Kind of Miraculous Paradise over the course of one weekend (I generally read books very slowly). I could not put it down, and had a weekend filled with joy, grief, and laughter. One of the blurbs on the back cover refers to it as an "act of radical empathy." I don't have much to add to that. Rarely (or never) have a been given the keys to a life I not only never though I'd have access to, but frankly didn't think much about before reading this book. Allen pulls you in, demanding your attention, empathy, and care. It's really incredible.
