Review: When I learned online today that Amazon had delivered my pre-order of this amazing book, I immediately went upstairs to retrieve my parcel. I just couldn't wait to look it over!I'll admit that part of that was to examine the fastidious and dedicated collecting work put in by Hugh Nini & Neal Treadwell {I was online under-bidder to them on more than a few photographs herein ;-} but mainly just to see both the images I'd never seen and to revisit those I had (and longed for) like "Not Married - But Willing To Be."Too, the quality of the book itself should be mentioned, with its heavy sewn binding. This is a volume that will last for decades - like the loving and much loved photographs it celebrates.Of all of "affectionate men" photographic collection books I've owned over the years - maybe beginning with the one put out in conjunction with the Library of Congress? - this is by far my favorite. I'll cherish it.

Review: I happened to be looking at something else when this came into view on my screen. I checked out the synopsis and decided I "had to have it." Not at all disappointed (except for the minor gouge in the cover...sorting machine?). Anyway I completely stopped what I was doing to flip through it. I found myself getting completely choked up. I realized a lot of things....some personal, some more reflective. The most poignant: I'm definitely taking a different approach to my own life...a more positive one, I hope. The other, I realized, is that I've always 'known' the struggle down through time for men such as me, but this book really helped me to get my mind around it...we've always struggled and most folks wouldn't see the absolute subtle nuances in these photos that I see....so glaringly. I see acts of defiance and downright rebellious postures and expressions....major acts of bravery for their time. Really helped me to remember....I am NOT alone in this.....thank you for this collection...it matters more than I actually realized when I ordered it.

There's such a wide variety of subjects and so many breathtaking photos that it's honestly hard to put down, and the printing and binding are excellent as well.

Review: I’m enamored with this book. I’ve been spending time contemplating these photos, wondering who were these men? What was their story? Did their love survive? I look at them and see faces that look like they are a product of their time, and some who look like they could have been plucked off an Instagram account today. And I see myself in them.Beyond being a book of touching images though, it says that same-sex love is real and has been with us throughout history. But now, with photographic evidence, we can point to it and say it’s real and it always has been. It can’t be denied. It can be erased. It can’t be dismissed. It can’t be legislated away. And it can’t be argued that it doesn’t occur naturally.If there was a second edition to this book, I would definitely order a copy immediately.

Review: Loving makes me reflect on how much I take for granted: that I can get married, buy a house in the suburbs with my husband, adopt kids, and get warm wishes passed along to the same guy I married from the straight dudes at CrossFit. There are pictures of us all over the house and in our holiday cards every year. And then these men stood out in the world with true bravery, 70 or 90 or 110 years ago, had their love captured on film, and had to hide it away.Yet what’s surprising about this gorgeously produced book is how the love between all these male couples still shines forth anyway, and in some ways feels even more precious for being under the radar. As the authors say, you just can’t hide the look of love between two people in love. It’s The Look. Even between two pre-Civil War men in a tintype. Even between two marines. Even between two men who work on a train, in overalls. They love each other. They’re lit up about it. Even if they’re Confirmed Bachelors in most of their lives, they’ve struck gold and fallen in love.That’s what makes this book so extraordinary, even a bit confounding and confusing at first. Everyone in it is so happy. They found someone to love them romantically. They can’t hide it. For me Loving is the book 2020 needed.
