Title: More elementary than expected

Review: This is a beautifully written book, though more elementary than I expected. No math! No math at all! The author does a good job of presenting the standard model and the Big Bang model as simply as can be done, and highlights how elegantly they, together, explain much of what we know about the universe. If you've never read anything at all about quantum mechanics or the origin of the universe, this would be a good place to get the big picture. But the book was flawed, for me, by occasional forays into philosophy. Wilczek is a proponent of strict materialism. This means that for him, physics explains not just the physical world, but all that exists. So, humans are nothing more than random collections of elementary particles obeying the laws of quantum mechanics. When you think, "I'm going to move my hand," the "I" is just an illusion. There is no "you," there are just atoms, energy, and time. The writings of Shakespeare? Just the accidental output of random clicks on a keyboard, if you keep pecking at the keyboard long enough. There are enormous philosophical and mathematical problems to this viewpoint, but they are simply ignored, and the author's strict materialism presented as the mature, adult viewpoint. It is a little condescending. Nevertheless, I enjoyed the read, especially the view of the atom that replaces protons and neutrons with quarks and gluons. Science has come a long way from my high school and college days! It's fun to look back at the journey.

Title: My favorite book in a long time...

Review: This is an excellent book, written by the very thoughtful, insightful, and brilliant physicist Frank Wilczek. Wilczek mentions in the introduction that he wrote this book to answer some of the questions that his friends and colleagues had about physics. He endeavors to explain these Fundamentals, to curious people that “have intelligence, but lack knowledge” of these physics concepts. I was very impressed by his ability to incorporate so many different topics, many of which I wouldn't think of associating with physics at all. For example, he mentions religion and spirituality, and how certain great contributors to the field of physics were at least partially motivated by searching for answers to their religious questions.

The book has two main sections, divided into a total of 10 chapters. I found it very easy to read, and I really enjoyed the way Wilczek is able to explain complex ideas in a very straightforward and fluid manner. This doesn't read like a textbook, partly because Wilczek presents information while also connecting the ideas to other fields or contemporary situations.

Some of my favorite topics included Measuring Time, The Future of Time, and ideas about the speed of thoughts.

I feel like the book does exactly what it set out to do; explaining these fundamental physics concepts in plain language that isn't difficult to follow. I really enjoyed the book, and I'm glad that someone that is so accomplished in the field, is still able to connect with the laymen so well. 5/5

Title: Extraordinary!

Review: Before you start reading Fundamentals Ten Keys to Reality, have a chinstrap handy, because you'll need it. The author's ability to explain in simple terms the complexity of the universe will boggle your mind and drop your jaw chapter after chapter.

Title: Note for naysayers

Review: Author "Wilczek is the Herman Feshbach Professor of Physics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, founding director of the T. D. Lee Institute and chief scientist at the Wilczek Quantum Center in Shanghai, China, and a distinguished professor at Arizona State University and Stockholm University."

Oh...and he won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2004 for the discovery of asymptotic freedom in the theory of the strong interaction.

And...you are? A guy with an undergrad in math from Berserkeley...and a couple of grad courses in CS...from Chico? Really? Tell us more.

Title: Masterpiece

Review: A difficult, and beautiful book with a huge scope. Wilczek is brilliant and it takes work to keep up. However, the payoff is worth it. I will be thinking about this text for many years to come.

Title: Who is the audience?

Review: The book is beautifully written but significantly flawed. It's too 'fundamental' for a physicist, taking a page to explain what one technical word would convey. And it's too obtuse for the non-technical reader. Essentially, the book is a college course in the History of Physical Thought, freshman or sophomore year. Galileo, Newton, Maxwell are given brief biographical sketches. But the truth is, quasiparticles and quarks and QED and QCD and 'color' and 'fractional charge' and 'fields' cannot be simply explained in a few paragraphs. The book is brief, too brief, and its philosophy too shallow to compensate. Truthfully, I learned nothing new from the book. Not a single thing. Also, the accomplished author and Nobel winner too often says 'it will be explained in the next chapter'. That's bad planning. And it underscores the shallowness with which complicated ideas are presented.

Title: Not for people with graduate or undergraduate degrees in engineering, math or physics, or chemistry

Review: It's a really strange book and so grossly oversimplifies particle physics, it makes it largely worthless. I much preferred Roger Penroses Road to Reality and Ed Tellers book on the Dark Secrets of Physics. I regret spending 20 dollars and wish I could get a refund. Rather than donate it to the Salvation army, I will use it to start fires as no one else wastes there money or time. It functionally contains no diagrams or figures, or equations. If you're into philosophy and literature you might enjoy reading it. He has a nice writing style. But it maybe me, I only understand advanced mathematics well, I flunked philosophy. We need Robert Hartle or someone with heavy credibility wrt to teaching to explain this more coherently for people who want to keep up to date with particle physics. Susskinds books on Physics are outstanding, lucid but he does not have one on particle physics.
