Review: Maxfield Parrish was very interesting, as an artist and an individual. The book I just received was printed decades ago and is a gem. The seller, BritabracBooks in NYC, advertised this book as being in "good condition" and described its one very minor flaw exactly as it is. I'm entirely pleased, and think this book deserves a condition rating of EXCELLENT.

BritabracBooks did a FANTASTIC job preparing this item for delivery, which is (wonderfully) surprising considering how inexpensive it is. Packaged to PERFECTION, with an outer casing and inner bubble wrap padding that fit the book exactly and kept it entirely safe in transit. Someone at BritabracBooks put real time and effort into doing this RIGHT. That's a business worth supporting.

A good low price. An honest, conscientious seller. A solid transaction with delivery ahead of schedule. A decades-old book in nearly new condition. A seller, or a person employed by BritabracBooks who appears to LOVE BOOKS (and/or people) enough to provide the best in terms of product and service. From now on, EVERY time I look to purchase a book I will search BritabracBooks' inventory first. I truly appreciate (and admire) this seller, and have every confidence in him/her.

Review: I was very excited when I saw this was available again, as my beautiful original had been damaged. It was almost heartbreaking to see that the lovely “Maxfield Parrish blue” was not properly reproduced. The quality of the colors and the overall print is inferior to the original. I would expect a book of this quality to sell for about $19.99. However, I’m keeping this, as the information is still good and it seems doubtful anyone is going to come along and produce a better copy. I loved my original and I’m sad this doesn’t measure up.

Review: Coy Ludwig has put together an interesting and useful book. The section on how Parrish created his paintings by layers of paint and varnish to create a glow was particularly fascinating. It sits on my coffee table and guests find the book very interesting to read and look at as well. Profusely illustrated.

Interestingly, the cover shows a very blue version of Daybreak, Parrish's most famous painting. It matches the known prints of Daybreak from the early 20th Century. Yet, the original is much more golden and violet. I have a limited edition print done from an accurate photograph of the original. It's beautiful and really makes the blue version stand out as almost another painting.

While the book doesn't explain this difference, it remains one of the definitive books about Maxfield Parrish and a "must own" for any fan or collector of Maxfield Parrish.

Review: This book has always been the "essential" Maxfield Parrish reference for me. It contains page after page of information about the artist's incredible personal and professional life. It also goes into great depth detailing the illustrator's perfected (and tedious) technique of creating illustrations. From crafting meticulous miniatures for layout to the final process of layering oil glazes onto the canvas. It's all there.

I would highly recommend this book to Illustrators, art teachers, and overall art enthusiasts who want to expand their knowledge about illustration and a true master of the past. This book has been cited in other publications such as "Step by Step Graphics" for the depth analysis of his technique.

My only small criticism is that I would've liked to seen more color prints within the book. A few too many black and white reproductions of the artwork. That aside, I feel this book is of tremendous value.

Review: At the turn of the 20th Century a small group of artists including Maxfield Parrish and NC Wyeth (father of Andrew Wyeth) were head and shoulders above their contemporaries in imagination, scope, quantity and quality of their work. Parrish's work, when seen in person, has a glow and magical sense of light unlike almost any other paintings I've seen.
He painted using a brilliant white ground on his canvas then layered the color using one color at a time with each separated by a layer of vanish. It was similar to a printing process. As a result light travels from the surface of the painting through the colors to the white ground and then is reflected back to the viewer.
This book has a good description of his work and a nice selection of his catalog.

Review: Good book on Maxfield Parrish artworks. The only drawback, as many others have said is that some of the illustrations are in Black and White. That said, there are numerous wonderful colour plates and for the artists out there, there is an illuminating chapter on Maxfield Parrish's painting technique. I'd reccomend this book to artists for that alone. A good book on Maxfield Parrish.
