Title: The Monster and his Little Treasure

Review: I became addicted to Isoellen’s writing back when she started crafting her first book on Wattpad: Choosing Her Alpha, an Omegaverse story which has since been published. I also read her early version of Her Broken Alpha, along with several other of her stories on Wattpad as well. So, I think I have some basis to say that she excels at world-building and at bringing paranormal characters brilliantly to life. I loved alpha Kane and omega Sasha in Choosing Her Alpha. And now I adore Kane’s brother Darre, and omega Naya just as much.

In Her Broken Alpha, Darre’s and Naya’s world is completely opposite that of Kane’s peaceful, prosperous Sector. Naya is kidnapped and brought to Darre’s chaotic Sector, where she meets the alpha who becomes hers, although initially much against his will. He is remorseless anger to her caring empathy. He’s all iron will to her pliant devotion. His Sector is anarchic, sorely lacking in resources, and a haven for criminals. Prior to Naya’s unexpected entry, his life is devoted to revenge against his family and to defeating others who challenge him. Until Naya.

There is plenty of fodder here for multiple twists and turns in the storyline: plotting evil priests, hidden enemies of both Darre and Naya, and, distracted by his internal struggles, Darre’s own disregard, blindness, to what is going on around him in the Sector. There is adequate suspense to worry yourself over! And plenty of lengthy, torridly hot sexual encounters as Darre and Naya bond with each other. Darre does refer to himself as a monster, but it quickly becomes clear why Naya likes to refer to him as her “Monster!” I highly recommend Her Broken Alpha, and I wish I could give it more than 5 stars. I hope the author will continue with this world and give us a 3rd book.

Title: Great Second Book in this Series - Much Steamier, but One Questionable element

Review: Isoellen is a great writer and I'm anticipating more of her omegaverse stories within this setting. This story varies quite a bit from her first book in this work Choosing Her Alpha in that there is a lot more sex in this story. Just to let readers know. The first book is a slow burn. This book is NOT, it starts hot and heavy and goes from there. Which I enjoyed.

I personally think that readers looking to get into omegaverse should start with her first book as it's a great introduction. That's how highly I think of her.

Moving to this book - it's a good continuation of the series. I loved seeing more of the hierarchy and was interested in seeing the arrangements (sort of arranged marriages) with omegas going with alphas they aren't bonded to for periods of time to conceive etc. This was a nice additional layer to another district of the world. (The districts of this world reminds me of the hunger games slightly).

The hero is a good dark character. The heroine I had a major irritation with- the GIGGLING! When he wants her to claim him, a BIG deal, she's giggling as he brings her mouth to his neck. That is a little girl thing and made me annoyed. She giggles a few other times too. I personally hated this.

However - I had one questionable issue with this book and that is why it gets four stars instead of five. The BDSM scenes. First of all - they are well done. A lot of omegaverse they try to throw in BDSM and many authors don't know what they are doing. I would have really liked them, I personally like BDSM. I WANTED to like them.

But she was PREGNANT during them.

This was such an issue for me. Did this bother anyone else? As an alpha... his number one thing is impregnating his omega and then protecting his baby. It seemed like a huge disconnect that he'd be doing an intense spanking bench scene- with paddles and flogs.

I googled BDSM and pregnancy (erase my internet history if I die please) and there was a lot of info on bondage (what was safe for bellies) but not on the hitting. Spanking with hand on butt ruled ok as long as not too intense but that's all I found. I'm not a sub, just a reader, but this really bothered me because it felt like 1. if this scene was going to happen, just make her not pregnant. 2. I felt like it wasn't consistent with alpha character. They are controlling but they are protective.

(Another character uses BDSM methods on a VERY pregnant omega in the book too.)

Also - the reasoning on WHY he was even punishing her. Because she saved his life? Yet it broke a rule? That pissed me off. If it was a way to do a scene they both were going to enjoy - OK that's fine. But it isn't.

He is punishing her because she broke his rule. Period. It's dumb and infuriating and that is not a part of BDSM. Actually, to be honest, none of their scenes are BDSM because he never actually gets her consent to enter into that kind of relationship with her, but Alpha and Omega stories don't really have a lot around consent. She gets aroused when he enacts punishment so thats enough to determine she's a submissive (as all Omegas are I guess). I guess the entire premise that he punishes her when she breaks his rules is all that matters. It just really pissed me off that first - he had rules for her, and two - she did it to save his life and he's still punishing her.

It really rubbed me the wrong way both because it was unfair and because it put the baby at risk because she was pregnant. This punishment she gets is the most intense one in the book. It was a sour note to end the book on.

Anyway, an enjoyable additional entry but not as good as the first book. Although the steaminess level being elevated was welcome. The first book could have used a bit more.

Epilogue notes: I'm really not feeling Merrick (I think that's his name) getting a redemption arc. He was in Book 1 as the villain that wanted to force the heroine into being with him. Now he gets a little more time with us at the end of this book. Sorry - still a no go on wanting to read his story. There are 12 Royal Brothers and I'm assuming we are going to get all of their stories going in birth order and I think Merrick is the youngest so he'd be last. It will take me that long to get over it probably LOL.

Review: I've read Isollen's first book twice and will probably read it again. It's like a gritty beauty meets beast version. This book carried that theme as well. Isollen's characters are written well, emotions are described effectively, and there is no wishy washy going back and forth. I think I liked the first book so much because we got to see more of her world and the ground work was laid for how their society works. This book fleshes out a little more of that society in describing what some of the males go through in the Un to become proper Alphas. I usually don't read a lot of, 'omegaverse?' , but I do like male characters that are protective and caring and female characters that have a brain. I like that in this book the male is horrible to start with, doesn't care much about his sector, but the reason is explained and understandable. He changes as if a light switch were turned on and he wakes up, so to speak. I would have liked to see more than just the tower and the females home in this, but I get that sector 2 is also a lot harsher than the sectors in the previous book and the male here doesn't know who to trust, so it works. I would suggest to read the first one so there is more understanding when it comes to the social dynamic of drones and betas, but this book does touch on those subjects and can be read alone. There are a few references to the first book, which I like and love when an author ties their books together with past characters and references. Good, strong second book.

Edit: I do need to give the author more credit. I reread my review for her first book and I am glad that if it was read it was taken to heart. The first book is written in the females perspective and this book switches back and forth. Thank you for giving us the males inner thoughts and letting us in. It made the book so much more!
