Title: Parts of it seem like a stab at intellectual property (like PQ)

Review: This is a book that is designed to help you succeed with people in a bunch of scenarios. Edwards specifically targets three areas:

*1. The First Five Minutes*

- as in how do you make a great first impression that stands out

*2. The First Five Hours*

- how to you stay memorable

*3. The First Five Days*

- how do get that next date or make a friend a best friend.

Unfortunately, some of the chapters don't provide enough depth to really learn the topic at hand, which is where Edwards training is supposed to help you if you purchase it.

Overall decent book, though some of it seems to aim more towards creating intellectual property than sticking with the terms that are already used.

I am not aware of a single book that covers more ground, though single books do a much better job than Edwards does in a chapter.

Title: Fine for someone completely lost when it comes to people...

Review: I was a bit underwhelmed. This book is fine for a person who is beginning their journey on trying to become more social, but anything past that, I would skip.

There is some mention of actual scientific studies (although grossly oversimplified), but she splices in her "Twitter polls" as if they are anything but convenience samples of like-minded subjects who would fall under the demand characteristics confound. Oh, and almost every one of those "polls" has an accompanying image with her handle prominently displayed.

Speaking of, there were MANY mentions of the website and self promotional materials (oddly, EVERY 'tool' was found through the exact same URL). We should expect some self promotion, but this became excessive.

I gave 3 stars because I believe her intent was admirable; attempting to help those in need of social training is something to respect. It just felt very "life coach"-y.

Title: If you suck at really connecting with many people, this is for you.

Review: Introvert or extrovert. Shy or outgoing. We all hit walls one way or another when it comes to meeting and connecting with people. It's funny that after reading this book how universal communication problems are. Just because you talk a lot doesn't make you a good communicator. Just because you don't talk a lot doesn't make you a good listener. Think about when the two extremes interact. They find the fault is in the other personality type. The introvert is annoyed by this stereotypical talkative extrovert. The extrovert is bored by this stereotypical quiet introvert. The problem isn't personality types, it's lack of empathy. In fact, both sides are not communicating properly and being lazy. They both need to follow the same tips to improve their communication/relationship skills. This book will really help you recognize what you may be doing wrong and spell out exactly what you should be doing and looking out for. Especially in this age where things are all done over the wall of the internet, it becomes crucial to maintain these basic communication skills.

I've been trying to implement the tips/challenges outlined in this book, and I can already see my network slowly growing and my communication skills getting stronger. Highly recommend that you read it closely, and try to do all h.w. type stuff. I don't think I need to tell you there is a big difference between knowing and doing. You want to get in the practice now, not when the relationship stakes are higher.

NOTE: Just as a tip when deciding to purchase the book, the E-book Deluxe version is pretty bad. Formatting is TERRIBLE. Looks like a bootlegged version of the book LOL. And the clips just repeat the lessons in the book. But yeah, the formatting.... Jesus have mercy on it. Avoid e-book until you hear they revised it properly. Returned the E-book and got an actual paperback copy. As of right now 8/7/18, they haven't done anything to fix the e-book.

Title: Repeat of books past - not worth it!

Review: I read this book along with going
through Vanessa's Body Language Trainer course, which I do NOT recommend taking - it wasn't worth the money, nor was this book. I'm unsure how this book has such a high review. Vanessa claims everything is science-based, yet she backs very little up with actual research. So much of her content is a repeat of information you can find in books before hers, yet she claims to have come up with a bit of the information in her "research lab." There are many moments in the book where Vanessa is just spouting her number of followers and supposed credentials, which to me sounds like she is trying too hard to prove she's worth listening to. Don't bother with this one, even if you're new to the subject - check out something by Janine Driver, Joe Navarro or Jack Schafer, where the information is more useful and credible.

Title: Game changer

Review: I first came across with the works of Vanessa Van Edwards with her YouTube videos and they were great. When later I found out that she had written a book I thought to myself that I had to pick it up.
Her book "Captive" is about explaining the social science that make people tick, and how can you "hack" that social science to your benefit and use it to succeed in your relationships in life.

Two unique points that I think this book has to offer:
First is that the book is written in a very simple and casual way that helps break down complex ideas and make the book to a very fun read.
Second point is that the book includes a lot of ways for active learning, for example the challenges at every end of a chapter and the digital content that's in their site for further information on the subjects in the book.
One downside I noticed in the book is how the success of the people that's presented in the book is linked to one characteristic treat that Vanessa is trying to emphasis in every chapter. I think it’s over-simplifying to claim that one treat lead to their success in life.

Overall I think this is a great book, has some great insights would recommend to anyone who's trying to step up their social skills. Would definitely suggest doing the challenges that are presented in every chapter to fully maximize the book and even doing them for the fun of it!
