Title: USA's Ultra in the 21st Century with teeth!

Review: Although the book initiates in a dry read it progresses to shed this posture and becomes a very interesting reservoir of information on defensive and offensive cyber capabilities of the USA agencies in the first part of the 21st century by the former director of National Security Agency (NSA) and Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). This extensive memoir provides the reader with what took place in NSA and CIA after 9/11, by the 2004 Intelligence Reform Act (IRA), in these agencies and how they protected the country defensively and then offensively. Additionally, on page 166 the reader is provided with the new American intelligence community created by IRA with the newly created Director of National Intelligence (DNI) at the top of the heap.

After being trained by NSA and being in this environment interacting with NSA products during this period many questions I personally had are answered by this account. From this text it is apparent so many people lacked a basis understanding of what NSA's function was and is today. As a retired USAF officer I very much appreciate General Hayden's references and analogies to air force nomenclature and models relating to “Spy Stuff.” This combined with lessons in war college twenty years ago clear the fog of “what are we learning this stuff for?”

I agree with the author the public needs a deeper understanding of what American Intelligence is and does and he lays this out quite well. The reader needs to comprehend and fully understand at least minimally the topics addressed in this book to appreciate this ongoing endeavor. Others will have much difficulty for it is not a primer on electronic spying. Hayden, although a fighter pilot by training, clearly explains how disruptive the digital age was for American Intelligence. However, this book needs a glossary to assist the novice with the plethora of acronyms which took me several years to adopt.

Prior to reading this book I would highly recommend David Kahn's “The Code Breakers” as a primer to this arena and then Michael Smith's “The Secrets of Station X” which will place you in the frame of mind to begin to understand where General Hayden begins his memoir. I agree this is a MUST READ for anyone who desires to understand the value of signal and human intelligence and the very complex and difficult decisions involved for how far our government should go to protect our Country!

Review: Gen. Michael Hayden has incredible credentials - retired USAF four-star general, former DNI, DNSA, and DCIA to name a few. I love precise language, and Hayden doesn't disappoint. Given his roles within our government, that precision is necessary. It's likely a factor in why it has taken me so long to review - I didn't want to debase that precision.

The book is thoughtful and informative. Hayden writes about policies I disagree(d) with but offered a different perspective, forcing me to reflect upon my views with a fresh eye. Having an open mind is a wonderful thing, as are challenging your beliefs and maintaining a respectful discourse when there is disagreement. This is especially true for our nation today.

It is amazing to me that there are people like Gen. Hayden walking around in public without security detail (as far as I know). It's difficult to comprehend the secrets he keeps, but it makes me sleep better at night knowing there are people like him to keep them. It is a precarious balancing act to be able to work in the intelligence community while still being a father, husband, neighbor, etc. This is a guy who can deal with those who wish harm to our country in the morning, and have neighbors over for a BBQ at night or watch his beloved Steelers without skipping a beat. He does write of incidents like this - it's his normal and most of us couldn't handle it. Not even close.

As Hayden writes, "Some things have to be secret. And there are other things that should not be confirmed by the government even though they are “known.” We form our opinions on policy based on what we know. Like an iceberg, there is WAY more that lies beneath. Hayden writes about the necessity of honesty within the intelligence community, “To live outside the law, you must be honest.” These individuals who so carefully guard and protect our nation demonstrate integrity on a level most only know in theory. I have a newfound respect for intelligence officers and am grateful for their existence. Knowing that the information within this book is unclassified (or declassified), I am gobsmacked with the amount of knowledge he has that he cannot speak about. I am also certain that he will keep that information secret no matter what.

Whether one agrees or disagrees with Gen. Hayden, no one can doubt his patriotism and service to our country. This is a book that I continue to think about, especially in such politically charged times. Though originally purchased as an e-book, I have also purchased physical copies to give to friends and family. I highly recommend this read and am looking forward to reading it again as a companion to The Assault on Intelligence.

Title: An odd and disappointing book

Review: The book has three parts.

The first nearly half of the book is dull. While the author sets out his goals for the book, my goal was to read far enough to find something interesting.

The middle section is storytime. Finally, General Hayden tells us about how the CIA, in particular, actually operates. Unfortunately, if you want stories about agents in the field you will be disappointed. The only "adventures" he covers are political ones.

The last part is a political narrative where he defends Bush 43 and castigates Obama. He spends a great deal of time defending the actions of the Intelligence Community, and it is telling that most of the interviews he tells us about were on Fox.

I had high hopes for this book as I wanted to learn more about how the US intelligence agencies operated.

Those hopes were not met for me and I cannot recommend this book.

Review: I got 25% of the way through the book and couldn't go any further; too boring. It would have been nice to get some actual case examples which could have been general enough not to divulge any secrets but nothing of the kind. If you are into politicians and lawyers deliberating every minute detail of freedom versus security then this will work for you.
