Based on the reviews I was expecting something more synthetic--by that I mean a treatise that takes information from a variety of sources and weaves a better understanding of psychotropics: how they work, when they work, and what to be on the lookout for. I was hoping to get the sense of two very experienced sages in a back and forth exchange on what works. Not here--just a rehashing of noteworthy clinical drugs which if we are honest with ourselves, most psych meds aren't, noteworthy that is, and study results devilishly difficult to duplicate.

Perhaps what I liked least was the formatting, with full text page after page with nary a break in sight. More useful IMO would be bullet summaries of the medications, highlighting doses, interactions, and indications, including widespread off label ones. Regarding doses, I want to know where to start, where to go and how long to get there. along with how to taper off if one needs to.

And so little of what we actually do is use off the shelf remedies for indicated conditions. By the time a patients sees a psychiatrist these days, the easy tries have failed--now what? Why are some drugs used off label, and where is the evidence to chart when I try it.

Maybe I am being too hard on the book, and maybe I need to be open minded when reading that Buspar is every bit as effective as benzodiazepines. (Not in my hands at least). It is well organized, but again needs some serious formatting revision--it is just so hard on the eyes, one may as well just pick up your favorite 5 pound pharmacology text. Many of the newer meds are mentioned, and toward the end succeeds in taking a second look at special populations that clinicians mind find helpful.

Review: This is the kind of comprehensive practical clinical psychopharmacology book that you can devour in a few days and then go back to for specifics time and time again. Obviously, the authors are gifted clinicians and have looked at all the research out there. A very thoughtful and engaging book.

Review: it's a good book, it always has been. But they keep pushing out new editions without really adding much of anything. There is absolutely NOTHING in this edition about drugs for addiction/detox that wasn't in the 4th edition. I'm disappointed. If you're a new resident though, it's a good book to have in your inventory.
