The inside story of how Pete Rose became one of the greatest and most controversial players in the history of baseball

Pete Rose was a legend on the field. As baseball’s Hit King, he shattered records that were thought to be unbreakable. And during the 1970s, he was the leader of the Big Red Machine, the Cincinnati Reds team that dominated the game. But he’s also the greatest player who may never enter the Hall of Fame because of his lifetime ban from the sport. Perhaps no other bal

Title: The Fragrance of Rose
Date: Reviewed in the United States on June 8, 2019
Review: I’m glad I sidestepped the first review. This book was a real eye-opener for me. Not knowing much about the man who I saw on the cereal box and television as a kid, I wanted to hear from Pete Rose. I’m not a baseball fan, but I have watched some games and been to the ballpark. What I come away with is the sense that this man lived for baseball. To this day he still comes off as passionate about the game. His insights are invaluable and I would recommend that anyone who lives in the realm of slapdash, haphazard and approximate effort (as a wise man once called it) to have a go at this book and compare yourself to Pete Rose. Ask yourself what you’re missing.

This book had me looking in the mirror about all kinds of stuff. My job, my role as a father and grandfather, my faith. I mean, Pete Rose was on a different level when it comes to the sheer drive to win and to play with excellence. What are we out there for? What are we doing anything for? Do we have that inner drive to win at something? Not that we have to be competing all the time, that’s not what I mean. This man was driven to an excellence that bordered on obsession or fanaticism.

People seem to want Pete Rose to apologize in a way that they will believe him. It will never happen to many peoples’ satisfaction. Why? Because everyone is looking for something different in an apology. Listen, Pete grew up wanting to play in the big leagues and no doubt wanted to make the MLB HOF. I can feel it in every word I read. But he was disqualified. That is a tragedy of epic proportions in sports history. I have been to Canton, but have no desire to go to Cooperstown. Why? Because Pete is not there. I can’t even imagine what he thinks about when he wakes up in the morning. Man alive.

I met Pete Rose in Vegas on business in 2018. I was walking to a class at MGM for a conference I was attending. He was behind a glass and I was like, β€œWow, there is Pete Rose!” I think I even said it out loud. I bought a ball for my son who is a baseball fan got a signature and about a five minute conversation. I’m from KC and he knew our team and asked me about things I didn’t have answers for.

I come away from this book understanding what drove Pete Rose to become one of the greatest ball players who ever lived. He was raised to do his best, to give it his all, to prepare, to play hard, to stay focused, to pay attention to every last detail of the game. The man once ran to first base in a spring training game after drawing a walk. Who does that? He didn’t care what people said about his play. He was moving at a different level. He played like ever year was the final year of a contract. When the world continues to crush Rose because he broke the rules and bet on baseball, the fragrance that I keep smelling is win, compete, give it your all, don’t give up, do what ever it takes, but play to win!

Title: Latest from Rose is unlikely to change minds, but may spark conversation.

Review: Pete Rose is not happy with the state of Major League Baseball today. Too many homers, too much noise in ballparks, too many mental errors, too many umpires who won’t call strikes, too many pitchers who would never have made a big league ball club when he played.
β€œThe fun has drained out of it for me,” Rose writes in Play Hungry: The Making of a Baseball Player. Rose’s newest book was released this week, billed as his β€œlove letter to the game.”
To be sure, Rose has suggestions for improving the game. He would split the season in two, with the division winners of each half meeting up in the playoffs. That would maintain the interest of fans throughout the season, avoiding the apathy that sets in when teams are out of contention before the break. He would reduce the number of teams, which he thinks contributes to the number of players who would never have been big leaguers in the past. Without as many openings at the major league level, players would spend more time honing the fundamentals in college or the high minors.
And he would eliminate long-term contracts, making players hungrier than they are today. He quotes Sparky Anderson as saying he would β€œgo to the World Series every year” if he had 25 guys on the last year of their contract. He argues that the game needs more β€œraw emotion, more giving a damn.”
Rose has often said he has written more books than he’s read. In Play Hungry, he writes that the only book he may have read in its entirety is the MLB rulebook. His latest book is dedicated to the fans, but it is clear that it is equally a letter to his late father.
It’s all here. The book covers his boyhood in Cincinnati, growing up watching his dad play semipro sports, especially football, and doing just enough in school to stay eligible to play ball. He writes about going to games at Crosley Field, and meeting some of the Dodger greats such as Jackie Robinson, thanks to Don Zimmer, who was 10 years Rose’s senior and had made it to the majors out of Western Hills High School.
All of the highlights are here, with enough stories to keep things interesting. He describes having dinner at the Sycamore Shores and Boat Club with Sam McDowell and Ray Fosse on the eve of the 1970 All Star Game, winding up the evening at his home around 1 a.m., then colliding with Fosse to the win the game at Riverfront Stadium. He has no regrets about playing hard, even in that exhibition game. (He also points out that Fosse was in the lineup when regular season play resumed, while Rose missed three games.)
There are some stories that are not as widely known, such as getting lost with Commissioner Bowie Kuhn as they tried to figure out how to get on to the field on the opening night for the new Riverfront Stadium, and the oblivious stadium attendant who tried to have them removed as trespassers.
Rose writes with gratitude about Frank Robinson and Vada Pinson teaching him how to be a big leaguer. He writes with pride about winning the World Series as the hometown boy on his Cincinnati Reds, about moving on from Cincinnati, coming back home, and breaking Ty Cobb’s record to become the Hit King.
Of all of his records, Rose writes that he is most proud of playing in 1,972 winning games, far more than any other player. The object was always to win.
And Rose writes about betting on baseball. He sees no moral problem with gambling per se, betting on baseball, or even betting on his own team. But he acknowledges that he broke the rules of baseball and regrets the shame that his banishment has brought on the name of his father and his son. Indeed, Rose feels the betting scandal would never have happened had his Dad still been alive.
A man not prone to regrets admits two: the betting scandal and not being a better student. Rose would like to go back in time and give his younger self a hard shake on the shoulders, in an attempt to get him to do better in school.
Rose acknowledges that he will never see the day that he’s inducted into Cooperstown. If it ever happens, he writes, he will be long gone.
β€œI’ll be gone soon enough. Out of the game we call life. I’ll leave behind quite a few records. I’ll leave behind a legacy of someone who worked as hard at the game as anyone out there, and someone who was as fierce a competitor as anyone who played the game. Anything I ever accomplished grew out of trying to live up to the example of my Dad, who was the one man in my life I ever idolized.”
For Rose fans, the book is a final tribute to a remarkable career. For Rose apologists, it will serve as another argument for Hall of Fame induction. For critics, the book won’t go far enough as an apology. Like political discussions on social media, no minds will be changed.
But this is pure Rose. This is the voice of the kid from Western Hills High, the brash rookie, the star who welcomed a new manager to his club, the Reds. There is little evidence of a ghost writer, or even a sharp editor (George Scherger is written as George Sugar). This is the voice of the Cincinnati kid who made it through grit and determination, who had the talent to be good and the drive to be great. The father’s son indeed.
