Title: The art of looking on the bright side

Review: A book that quotes the Scriptures, C.S. Lewis, and Dr. Seuss? An author who makes you laugh and cry, think and sigh? That’s my kind of book! On the Bright Side by Melanie Shankle offers anecdotes and thoughts on a variety of relatable topics ranging from friendship, faith, and family to beauty, aging, and being brave. She is faithful, forthcoming, and funny! While many people have “lost the art of looking on the bright side”, Melanie helps us do just that. Even though I am retired and an empty-nester, my soccer mom days a distant memory, her words still resonated with me. For example, she shares her feelings about her teenage daughter growing up and muses: “The worst thing kids do is grow up, turn into lovely people you genuinely adore, and then move out of your house.” Oh, how I could relate! At the end of each chapter, she offers an “on the bright side” reflection, because “We will love better, live richer, and laugh more when we live on the bright side.” This book is a delightful read that feels more like a conversation with a kind friend, one who knows that life has both ups and downs, but “the bright side is that you have a God who is always working for your good, even in the hardest of times.” I highly recommend this book!

Review: I love Melanie Shankle’s books. She’s one of the few authors I will read and re-read, and listen on Audible, and then re-read my Kindle highlights in a year.

In this memoir, I love how she takes a funny, memorable story, find a related biblical story, relate it to all of our lives, and remind us of the bright side of any low points.

I think any woman (or girl over the age of 16) will get something from this book, but as I read it, I kept thinking of my friend and neighbor, Jamie. Jamie’s daughter is rounding out her Junior year right now, just like Melanie’s daughter Caroline. Both moms have seen their competitive, Jesus-loving daughters face some tough challenges these past couple of years, particularly in the area of friends. They have had to encourage when their kid is down, say “good luck with that” when an opportunity for natural consequences arises, and agonize when there is nothing momma can do to help, other than listen and recognize something as character building. If this is you as a mom, or you are on either side of this season, get this book now.

Now, I’m going to go buy a winning lottery ticket so I can afford to buy this book for every female I know.

I’ve been acquainted with her writing for years - I faithfully read and interacted with other readers on her blog back in the days when she hilariously wrote essays that tens of people read every day. Listen - when Melanie tells a story, it is an EXPERIENCE. The podcast she co-hosts with Sophie Hudson, The BigBoo Cast, has me rolling with laughter, nodding vigorously, and talking back every single episode.

I’ve been looking forward to this book since we had a brief conversation on Instagram about some of the content. Why was I so surprised when I found myself devouring her words?! I’ve bought all her other books on Kindle. I thought I knew what to expect. I am solidly HERE for all of the Piper and Mabel and raccoon in the chimney stories. But this new book takes Melanie Shankle’s Texas influence to a whole new level. Finding the bright side and the proverbial silver lining to daily issues does not mean candy coating difficulty by glossing over hard choices. It’s about finding joy and discovering growth alongside life’s lessons. God absolutely wants you to have joy and life more abundant!

Review: I am so grateful that I got to read this before its release date (February 25, 2020). Melanie is such a sincere author. I do not have her gift of writing, but I'll do my best to share my thoughts about her latest book.
Melanie is amazing at being open and real with her readers. She shares tender moments, funny stories, and God's grace through his Word. You may shed a tear while reading this, but I'm almost positive you'll relate to what she's sharing and you'll learn to give yourself more grace. Life is hard, but God is still HERE. He's working all the while.
I found many sentences worth highlighting, but here is one I'll share:
"The bright side is, he loves us enough to lead us to exactly who he made us to be, and to give us victory when we stand our ground and fight to stay true to ourselves in a world that will tell us all the ways we need to change."

Review: The only bad thing about finishing a Melanie Shankle book is that you then have to just hope and pray that she'll write another one. And then another. And then another. I stumbled upon Melanie through reading Sophie Hudson's first book years ago, and then also ended up seeing them at a Lifeway conference that same year. Since then I have religiously followed them on social media and via their podcast, and they just simply add joy to my life, and what's not to love about that? I don't know them personally, of course, but see so much of myself in the way that they do life -- particularly in the way that they love Jesus and people so well. "On the Bright Side" is so relatable and so full of humor, insight, advice, and inspiration. In a wacky world where everyone seems full to the brim of bitterness and rage, this book is a true delight and a reminder that there is always, always, always a bright side. I can't recommend this book enough, unless it means lending my copy to someone, which I can't do. Sorry, not sorry.
