Horace 'Jim' Greasley was twenty years of age in the spring of 1939 when Adolf Hitler invaded Czechoslovakia and latterly Poland. There had been whispers and murmurs of discontent from certain quarters and the British government began to prepare for the inevitable war. Title: I wanted a war story. Too much sex and disgusting profanity. Read 'Unbroken' by Laura Hillenbrand instead.

Review: I wanted to read a war story. I didn't care for the graphic sex scenes (he writes about how he raped his future wife-who does THAT?) and the foul language was worse than usual. (By his own admission-he was obsessed with sex.) Just tell the story. Others have told war stories without the foul language and sex. Pass on this. 'Unbroken' by Laura Hillenbrand is SO much better!

Review: I was interested in this book because of it's historical value- because it's a very personal story/account of one of the most horrific events to take place in the 20th century from a point of view I am unfamiliar with- The British. Horace Greaslely and the men who are prisoners of war with him, go through unimaginable suffering and psychological anguish in German work camps- winters without proper shelter- bone broth for sustenance, watching their friends and comrades die at the hands of the SS- Rapist guards, dysentery, lice infestation, rats and all sorts. There are passages that I could have lived without, sex scenes between Horace and his secret ally, a woman called Rose. The sex scenes are written really oddly and read like a romance novel, which I really didn't care for. I just skim past them until they're done.
I think I understand why they are written in a lingering and detailed way- The experience for Horace must have been indescribably important and life-saving. I think that even though the subject matter is incredibly dark, it was written by a happy person and this shows in the lightness of the despair- if that makes sense. The word choices and phrasing is to me, immature and needs a bit more emotion.
The story still interests me greatly as I think Horace Greasley is a hero with a fascinating story, one that could make a great film if it were written by someone with a bit more heaviness to their stye

Title: Fact? Fiction? Something in between?

Review: This is an oddly written book. The author asserts that he was merely the transcriber of what Horace Greasley tells him (and he claims he took pains to verify the information), but he puts words and thoughts into the German captors, things Greasley could not possibly know. And I doubt that an elderly Greasley was giving him such detail on the play by play of his sex with his "English Rose." Where is a photo of her? Did her parents survive the war? How did she travel by train 200 times (I don't know where that number comes from, because the only number I read in the book was 73) to a location near a POW camp and not get the attention of the Gestapo? Dakotas don't have bomb bays, and I doubt troops were ferried back to England in bombers - and even if they were, no pilot is going to open the bomb doors if the troops are secured only by a rope. I think that Mr. Greasley's experiences were very real and very exaggerated.

Review: My mind is still reeling. This book was harsh! Unlike most of the holocaust type books I have read there was tons of sex, violence, suicide, rape, language, murder etc... it all very graphic. I suppose after being written by the victim it was all a very accurate description of what he experienced. It was a love story of sorts as well. Heroic moments are dispersed throughout also. This one took a toll on me. On to something lighthearted

Review: The book is poorly written, almost juvenile if it wasn’t for all the sex. The sexual descriptions become gratuitous, it’s unnecessary to go into as much detail as it does. There is no real sense of suffering, more like this gentlemen outsmarted the nazis at every turn. It is very self serving. It’s hard not to doubt the exploits of the hero of the story but if it is true, it’s a heck of a tale.

Review: I had to research reviews on this half the way through. Sensationalism and exaggerations are rife in this book, to the point it becomes difficult to read and give graces for.
However, the boom is well written and if you can forgive the author and ghost writer for putting together a book which is admittedly fiction for the most part, you may enjoy it.

Review: The allied soldier that this story is about is too good to be true. It is difficult to believe his claims even though the author says it has been verified by other sources. Many women find him irresistible, sex scenes, he wins a major fight without much trouble, and he is involved in major events again and again. Not believable, even if it is true.

Review: The writer should realise that the DC3 Dakota is not a bomber and the floor cannot open as it flies over the white cliffs of Dover and he was not taken anywhere by Landrover. Landrovers did not exist in 1945.
Other than those two really silly errors he lived a heroic life in terrible circumstances.
