Title: Confusing definitions

Review: This book is used for an introductory (200-level) logic circuit design class at my university.

Pros: The author is funny. Examples are fine, most of the homework problems are fine. There is a companion site with old versions of the questions and answers for each chapter for free. The latest version has a pay site with homework and answers for this edition.

Cons: My biggest issue is with the way the author defines and describes terminology. Here's what it felt like:

"An apple is an apple-shaped fruit that can have distinct gala, granny smith, golden delicious, etc. qualities."

- Uses the term in it's own definition (an apple is an apple...)
- Uses specific examples of the term to define the general concept (specifics should be expanded on after the general concept is understood)

"The pomaceous fruit of species Malus domestica, grown on deciduous trees."

- Not appropriate for an introductory course where the terms pomaceous, Malus domestica, deciduous, etc. haven't been talked about yet.

The last one happened quite often, and was extremely frustrating because I ended up spending a lot of time googling terms used in definitions. Luckily, the searches usually led to sites that explained what the book was trying to define, in simple terms that weren't difficult to understand at all. It's funny that a book that teaches you how to minimize complicated logic makes simple definitions really complicated. :P

Also, the wording in some of the homework problems was confusing, and there are no answers in the back to check your work. Answers for the current edition are available on a pay site, but it's not accessible unless your teacher sets up an account.

Review: This book is comprehensive. It covers a variety of topics, most of them are not covered in a semester of a college course. One thing this book can improve on is examples. It gives plenty of lecture information but does not provide on examples for which it can apply concepts on. I understand things better if practical examples are clearly shown, but other people may learn things differently and this book may work for them. Although this book was required for my Cornell ECE 2300 course, it was barely used since most of the topics are covered in lecture. It is a good reference material in case you didn't understand a certain concept. Honestly, I barely flipped through any of the pages.

Review: After reading the first few chapters, I have to agree with everyone that that this book is surprisingly well-written -- clear, precise and sprinkled with a dash of humour!
Of course, it is still a textbook, so don't expect it to be an electronics version of Harry Potter -- but with all that, this is easily one of the best textbooks I've ever read. Kudos !!

Review: Not worth half this amount. If you want to start with "Hello World" in VHDL or Verilog, this is NOT the book for you. My instructor had us read 100 pages of rules, and asked us to write a program. Not one example in the chapter. NOT ONE. Never executed the IDE before (Xilinx) and had no experience with either language. The book does not intersperse examples with rules to teach. It may as well be a rule book than a teaching book. Poor at best. You can do better than this Mr. Wakerly. I hope you teach better than you write, Mr. Wakerly. Those who do do, those who can't do teach and those who can't teach write. I know where you fit Mr. Wakerly. Enjoy the $177 now, cause there won't be any more!

It's a decent book; however, the book I was sent was the international edition so some of the assigned problems from the Professor were different than the US version. I didn't realize this until the very end. I double checked the ISBN and it matched up with the US version for some reason.

Review: I clicked to purchase the Kindle version of this book. The ISBN on Amazon's page was listed as 9780131863897 (which is what I needed per my school's bookstore listing). It wasn't until the start of this term that I realized that the Kindle version is an international version of some kind (ISBN is listed in the book as 9788131713662).

But since I'm here, this book is terrible. It's not straightforward at all, and not friendly to anyone new to the world of logic/design. If you're stuck using this book, I recommend writing down key words, ideas, phrases, etc. and just searching for sites online.
