How can certain songs carry us through a tough workout, comfort us after a breakup, or unite 50,000 diverse fans? In this fascinating field guide, neuroscientist and opera singer Indre Viskontas investigates what music is and how it can change us for the betterβ€”from deep in our neurons to across our entire society. Whether hip-hop fans, classically trained pianists, or vinyl collectors, readers will think about their favorite songs in a whole new way by the end of this book. This is a vibrant and smart gift for any audiophile.

Haiti?! I think she believes Bob lived in Haiti, not Jamaica. Which is...unique. But I guess to some people one Caribbean island is the same as the next.

For what it's worth, all three Wailers wrote the lyrics to "Get Up, Stand Up," not just Bob, and anyone who listens to the lyrics in the verses can hear quite clearly that it's an anti-organized religion song. So it's "about" Haiti the same way it's about Luxembourg or Brooklyn. But what it's really about is "the church" being a tool of oppression.

Am I picking at nits? I don't know. It's unfortunate that most of the world boils Bob's message, and the message of a lot of reggae music, down to a few snackable concepts. It's like saying the only thing classical music is good for is providing a pleasant soundtrack while you beat your slaves. It may have been that (just saying), but it wasn't only that.

Anyway, when I come across a wild inaccuracy in a book or article or documentary or graffiti on a wall, it makes me question everything else in the book or article or documentary or graffiti on the wall. If this one thing is so wrong, how right can the rest of it be?

Title: Wonderful book but very small type - hard to read

Review: I heard the author on NPR and immediately ordered the book.
While the content was interesting I found the type size and colored text very difficult to read.
Maybe an advisory should be put on the page or a large print version offered.
I would have bought an ebook version if it was offered for my Nook.
I do not own a Kindle

Review: I don’t write reviews and when I do it’s always a rave.. not this one.. I REALLY REALLY was looking forward to reading this book.. like many others already pointed out- it’s nearly impossible , painful... who sugnedvoff on this AWFUL idea... I might never read.. can I teade it in for the kindle version???
Very sad...seriously- whoever made the decisions here DEFINITELY did not seek out other opinions- impossible!! Or they were secret enemies and wanted the author to fail!!!!

Title: Almost impossible to read because of the grey text on turquoise paper

Review: Bought this book after seeing a great TedTalk by the author on a fascinating subject. The publisher has done a great disservice to the author because the type is small and a mid-gray on turquoise paper and almost impossible to read. I ordered a kindle version which I hope will be better.

Review: I will read this book, as I'm interested or I wouldn't have ordered it. I heard a radio interview with the author and it sounded intriguing--and maybe it is. But really, it's almost impossible to read due to the odd choice of colored paper and silver (?) lettering. I was also surprised at how brief the book is. In future, will read reviews before ordering.

Review: If you like music in any way shape or form this book is for you. As a musician and educator it left me energized and feeling inspired to become a better artist/teacher. It even gave me some ideas on how to go about that. It’s a quick read with tons of information. Absolutely loved it!

Title: Very difficult to see due to pale print on aqua pages.

Review: Wish I'd read the reviews first. Does the Kindle version have the same color combo, or is it black & white? Haven't read the book yet. Need REALLY good lighting for my 60-year-old eyes!
