Daniel Hogan's home, for the first 18 years of his life, was Masjid-i-Sulieman, in Iran. His father worked for an oil company, and Masjid-i-Sulieman (Mosque of Solomon) was where the very first oil in the Middle-East was discovered, in 1908. Title: Oh how I loved reading this book

Review: Oh how I loved reading this book! I lived as an American ex-pat in the same small town in Iran at the same time as the author, and the memories that he brought back were heartwarming, emotional, happy and often sad.

It is a book that does a wonderful job of exploring the emotional dichotomy of the ex-pat life- coming to grips with the guilt of living extravagantly in a land where the locals are often struggling, while at the same time coming of age and learning and loving a rich and ancient culture such as Persia.

The author’s travelling back to Iran and seeing it now through the eyes of an adult is wonderfully written with the help of many characters who accompany him on his journey of finding. Characters, that are all new friends he makes along the way and a testament to the pride and welcome of the Iranian people that I remember, as well as the sometimes fear of the unknown and cultural differences. His insights into modern day post revolutionary Iran accompany his memories of the days of ex-pat life under the Shah, as well as new understandings of ancient history and the very first oil well drilled in the Middle East in the town he is returning to. He does a great job in describing the desperation of the young generation, the struggle for very educated women to find their place in society, and the constant undercurrent of a society looking for change, regretting mistakes of the past and at the same time incredibly proud of who they are and very aware of the impact of the Americans and British upon their land.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone who has lived the ex-pat life and especially to those who lived it in the Middle East, as well as anyone wanting a glimpse into Modern Iran.

Title: A travel memoir which doesn't end quite where it started

Review: I enjoyed this book about Iran very much. At one point in his search for his family’s old cook, Daniel Hogan writes about holding two memories in balance: the boyhood version (a sort of ex-pat Swallows and Amazons), and his contemporary impressions of Iran: crumbling, messy, teeming. Yet the childhood idyll has an unexpected aftertaste, while the modern update, despite frustrations and disappointments, proves to be a warm mix of companionship, laughter and new friends to join, if not replace, the old-remembered ones.

What a lot has been lost: not just temples, gardens – and even half a hillside – but also youth, innocence … and a father. For me, the most moving scenes in the book are those between the author and his dad. It seems to me that this is not just about Iran, but about manhood, and what it means to be a son, a father, a husband and a friend in two very different cultures.

But there are also gains, described with a sharp and humorous eye for human foible, his own included, and a great ear for dialogue (even in Farsi).

The book is many-layered, bringing to life a complex country, where coming to terms with past and present is not just a challenge for the author. Woven into the story are history, culture, social comment and the experience of living on a frontier, not amongst the treasured glories of ancient Persia, but in the town where oil was first discovered in the Middle East and still reeking of gas. The detail is handled with a light touch and the unfolding narrative is compulsive read.

This is indeed the story of a quest. The author sets out to find an Iranian family. But in the end, perhaps it’s a different family that is sought, and yet another that is discovered.

Title: Degrees of separation - in a highly engaging book

Review: The Gulf is not quite as it seems. It sets out to tell the story of one man’s return to the country of his childhood (Iran) and his search for his dead cook’s family. But the country has changed, and so has the author. During his stay in Masjid-i-Suleiman, he meets a cast of characters who entertain and watch out for him and linger in the memory. They’re described with great affection. There are twists to the tale and diversions along the way but in the end this is about reconciling past and present in a country which has changed beyond all recognition - almost. It’s also a v good read. Funny too.
