Review: Bart Ehrman’s latest book is not a scholarly treatment of the history of concepts of the afterlife. Instead it’s a popular account of the history of the relatively simplistic account of the afterlife the author believes to be held by many Americans.Beginning with the Sumerian Epic of Gilgamesh then quickly turning to the Greeks he discusses Homer, Plato and a scattering of other authors but reveals nothing that isn’t obvious on a first reading of these texts. The surprisingly differing accounts held by the ancients, advertised by the publisher, turns out to be merely that Homer and Plato did not share the same ideas.Thus Ehrman surveys the Romans only to find, “Gasp!”, that different Romans from different centuries also had different beliefs. Ditto for the Old Testament. There is no effort to try to achieve a kind of synthesis. There is no examination of Eastern cultures’ ideas of an afterlife. There is no summary of what archaeology can tell us of prehistoric notions. Instead you get a summary of the ideas that Ehrman believes are at the root of modern Christian beliefs.A lot of the book is then devoted to Ehrman’s personal theory that Jesus Christ and St. Paul believed in the annihilation instead of the eternal punishment of wicked souls. It’s rather idiosyncratic and based on a host of assumptions. To be honest, I don’t see why he occupies a great part of the book dwelling on this point unless it is to shake readers from the idea that there is a consistent Christian teaching on heaven and hell.I can’t really think of a group who should read this. It’s written for a popular audience, since no scholar needs to be told that there are many accounts of the afterlife in Ancient Greece, but is mostly devoted to one scholar’s particular theory. In short, it’s caught in a kind of limbo between scholarship and popularization that should satisfy no one.

Review: This is the latest in Bart Ehrman's fine series of books examining the early history of Christianity. Ehrman is a Professor of Religious Studies and one of the best known writers in the field. Although his books are aimed at a general rather than specialist audience, there is no lack of scholarly rigor.As Ehrman relates it, ideas about the afterlife among Jews and Christians in the last centuries BC and in the first century AD varied widely and were heavily influenced by borrowings from other cultures, including Persian Zoroastrianism and especially Greek philosophy. It is important, when reading texts from what are now known as the Old and New Testaments, to understand what the people who were active when those texts were written would have understood them to mean. Often this varies considerably from how they are usually interpreted in the present day. Ehrman presents a wealth of fascinating details about, among many other things, how the concepts of eternal bliss and eternal punishment developed slowly and in response to issues and challenges faced by the people who were developing them.By the end of Heaven and Hell some of Ehrman's readers may feel a sense of unease because what they've just read disagrees with what they have heard in worship services for many years. That's perfectly acceptable. I've never believed that anyone's faith can be challenged unless they want it to be, and I believe that anyone who reads this and other works by Ehrman with open minds can feel more comfortable, rather than less, with their new knowledge.

Review: Why read a history of ideas on Heaven and Hell? Haven’t you made your mind up about them already? I have. So why read this book?Here’s a reason: It is dangerous to structure your thinking and your life around any set of beliefs, without investigating where those beliefs came from, how they changed over time, and how they arrived at your doorstep. This mundane observation needs emphasis because believers almost always discourage this inquiry. Instead, we are told, “Our Correct Ideas never changed; they didn’t need to. Since Adam and Eve, all right thinking people have thought exactly as we do now, about this subject.”This attitude is not confined to Christianity, or even to religion. Democrats claim they are carrying on the noble work of Thomas Jefferson and Republicans call themselves “the party of Lincoln,” but the ideas and concerns of these men in the 18th and 19th Centuries do not equate to their own in the 21st.Bart Ehrman is well-placed to enlighten us on the history of our inherited ideas about the afterlife. He devoted his life to studying ancient languages, literature and culture. No one can disqualify him when he takes a critical approach to the Bible, the way they try to disqualify ordinary, alert readers by saying, “That’s not what it meant in the original and you don’t know Greek or Hebrew.” [And of course the joke is, the type of original manuscript that could settle all criticism never existed.] Erhman is an excellent writer, sensitive to his readers’ fears, yet unrelenting in his scholarship. I’ve read several of his books and recommend all of them.What does Bart tell us about the afterlife? Descriptions of an afterlife change, somewhat as living species change over time through natural selection. The ideas in circulation now, derived ostensibly from someone’s reading of the Bible, are actually a strange brew of notions from many times and cultures. In fact, the whole superstructure is more attributable to Plato and Descartes than any “author” of the Bible. Our current ideas were canonized because they served the needs of the canonical authorities at the time, just as the books of the Bible were originally written because they served the needs of their many authors at an earlier time. The ambitious reader can find out what that process looked like by reading Edward Gibbon’s “The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire.”This can only surprise us, due to successful suppression by believers in Correct Ideas, see above. Even a casual reader of the Old Testament will notice that no one is going to Heaven or Hell, as they are described in modern Christian theology. From the book:“Alan Segal, the late scholar of Judaism, unequivocally stated: 'There are not any notions of heaven and hell that we can identify in the Hebrew Bible, no obvious judgment and punishment for sinners nor beatific reward for the virtuous.’”When I pointed this out to a minister friend, he shrugged it off with, “Maybe the people weren’t ready to be taught about Heaven and Hell back then.” There it is, gentle readers, your opportunity for a career in theology. Any unlikely fantasy that excites you could be added to the Gospel, as something God just hadn’t got around to telling us yet.Now let’s conclude with what we’re really interested in. Could Heaven and Hell actually exist? Yes, they could. Let’s assume they do exist. How then would the believer reconcile the ever-changing literature? Is God sending confusing messages? The most elegant justification for belief that I heard runs like this: “God and the afterlife are out there. Throughout human history, humans have explored the possibilities and written down what they discovered. God was not revealed all at once, but over time, in layers. That discovery is not yet complete.” Whether you want to participate in this dizzying project or not, this book encourages all of us to examine our beliefs honestly, in a spirit of genuine curiosity.

Review: The best book that I’ve ever read on the history of the afterlife. Dr Erhman takes us on his personal journey through his fundamentalist view to his more enlightened view of heaven and hell. Just when you think Dr. Erhman has covered it all on Judeo Christian history he comes up with one another hot topic. No pun intended. Can’t wait for his next book on the Armageddon.
