On a frigid night at Tibet's Drepung Monastery, Lama Tenzin Tashi is awakened by a fervent knocking on his door. Quickly he realizes these raps are a dreaded harbinger, one which will launch him on a quest to satisfy a vow, a blasphemous promise he wishes he had never made.
But at this point, the lama has no other choice. The journey must be undertaken, no matter the cost.

Title: well researched and inspiring (as well as enjoyable!)
Date: Reviewed in the United States on August 4, 2017
Review: I really enjoyed this book! The writing was uneven at times... sometimes I was captivated, and other times, no so much, I was just pushing through pages. But to just focus on the uneven times would lose what makes this book so terrific and special! The story and the thoughts and the depth of research and information about tibet and the thoughts and life of a lama, buddhism, what it's like under china... I really enjoyed that! Sometimes I felt like "oh, that was kind of silly dialogue" but then I'd forget that in the next pages because there would be something really inspiring! So... I guess I'm trying to encourage you to read this but... be forgiving for the rough parts and don't feel bad or give up if you are flipping through some places because a few pages later you'll be captivated! I don't want to offend this author (in case he reads this)... just because I didn't always love the writing in places doesn't at all take away from the fact that I'm honestly so glad he took the time to write this beautiful book that I was truly inspired by!

Title: Enthralling!
Date: Reviewed in the United States on March 7, 2021
Review: If you enjoy reading about diverse cultures and systems of belief, you owe it to yourself to read Gary Conrad's enthralling novel, The Lhasa Trilogy. While the novel serves well as an introduction to Buddhist beliefs, it also gives readers tantalizing glimpses into far deeper levels of Buddhist thought and wisdom (similar to the Buddhism-themed books by two other of my favorite writers, David Mitchie and Eliot Pattison). And as other reviewers have mentioned, the book's accurate, but more accessible interpretation of The Tibetan Book of the Dead will be appreciated by anyone who has ever felt bewildered by older interpretations.
The author doesn't shy away from the harshest realities of this world: war and death, torture and betrayal, sickness, grief, guilt, and tragedy. But that ability makes this wonderful tale of reincarnation ring all the more true. There are enough twists and turns to keep you turning the pages, yet none of it seems predictable. You won't get the feeling the characters' lives and personal characteristics have been plotted on a chart by the author so that everything would turn out exactly the way he intended. In fact, you won't get the feeling the novel has been "plotted" at all. The result of this kind of writing is a novel that lives and breathes and is a true gift to the spirit.
Though I've read all of Mr. Conrad's books and loved each one, I think The Lhasa Trilogy is my favorite book of all so far and I truly hope he has plans for more novels with Buddhist themes in the future. That said, while readers already interested in Buddhism will no doubt be attracted to the book, it is by no means intended for Buddhists only or for people interested in Buddhism. I would characterize it rather as a wonderful novel for anyone interested in a wide variety of philosophical ideas. Highly recommended.

Title: A swath of history and several lifetimes revisited
Date: Reviewed in the United States on May 2, 2016
Review: It was a good read. The story is well-written and interesting. It could've happened.
I didn't give the story five stars is because the English use by characters in Japan was unnatural to me. Even very, very fluent speakers of English as a second language in Japan will have grammatical (not to mention pronunciation) mistakes. If the dialogue felt more "natural," the dialogue would not have felt contrived.
In addition, the huggy/kissy scenes are really hard to believe. Even in society these days, casual pecks on the cheek simply do not happen. ...much less even in private.
Still it was a great story and mostly well told. It would make a great movie.

Title: My wife and I both greatly enjoyed reading βThe Lhasa Trilogyβ by Gary Conrad
Date: Reviewed in the United States on November 27, 2015
Review: My wife and I both greatly enjoyed reading βThe Lhasa Trilogyβ by Gary Conrad. As someone who has done some study of Buddhism, I thought he wrote an engaging story that introduced many esoteric Buddhist concepts about death and reincarnation in a palatable form to general audiences. This overall integration of good story and education reminded me a little bit of the Tony Hillerman mysteries in which the reader learns so much about Navajo culture and spirituality while engrossed in an entertaining story.
Several years ago as my father was dying from cancer, I waded through the difficult-to-digest βThe Tibetan Book of the Dead.β This tome focuses on the turbulent Bardo state oneβs consciousness enters into after death and before rebirth, a transition period with great potential to escape the seemingly endless samsaric cycle of birth, death, and rebirth. Because this tome was hard reading, I wish I would have read Conradβs book before, which distilled so many of these esoteric Buddhist concepts in a readily readable, understandable fashion. For those interested in being introduced to Tibetan Buddhist views on death and reincarnation, Conrad has provided us a great mechanism for doing so through βThe Lhasa Trilogy.β

Title: Might Qualify as a Literary Classic
Date: Reviewed in the United States on August 24, 2015
Review: The Lhasa Trilogy is a valuable contribution to the literature of the world of spiritually insightful writing that manages to transcend borders and boundaries and reach deeply into the common experiences of the human psyche.
Although the three main characters' stories are relatively slow-paced, they are nonetheless compelling, drawing the reader deeper and deeper into their lives, thoughts and beliefs. All three of the primary subjects and many of the secondary characters as well are real and dynamic. I came to care deeply about what happened to each of them as I was fascinated to see how they intertwined.
The Tibetan Buddhism teachings incorporated into the story line are challenging and will cause many readers to pause. Many will undoubtedly reject the work based on the didactic component. But Conrad's primary purpose is clearly not to teach but to entertain in the context of deeper spiritual teachings and experiences. At that, he succeeds admirably.
I am astonished that this book hasn't achieved much wider recognition and readership. If it weren't such a new work, I'd nominate it as a Literary Classic, it's that good.
