Review: This is the absolute best resource you can buy for the Network+ Certification. I went to Purdue University where I majored (and graduated!) in computer engineering. I now work in industry as a security engineer and am seeking deeper knowledge “from the ground up”. I have tried other training resources also, including ProfessorMesser and Jason Dion of DionTraining which are also popular. I found those decent, but nowhere near as good as Mike Meyers - and I will quantify my reasoning for that.

When I watch other instructors (e.g. DionTraining’s UDemy Vids), they are fast and very to the point. Dare I say rushed? They do not contain any real good context. Or background. Which is needed for beginners…. And frankly, much of it didn’t make sense, UNTIL MIKE EXPLAINED IT IN THIS BOOK HERE.

So, if you already know networking topics very well, and just want to know WHAT is covered on the Network+ so you can prepare and pass it using pre-existing knowledge, DionTraining’s UDemy course may work. And his UDemy course comes with notes for you which is nice.

But… If any of this is new for you, then like many neophytes, those videos just won’t FULLY make sense. And you truly need that extra background information, which only Mike provides.

Mike Meyers… man I hate reading, and I actually enjoy this mans book haha. He provides these perfect little examples and analogies/“storylines” which make it really clear. And, very difficult to forget. By the end? It honesty all makes sense.

You feel prepared after reading the first couple pages, which give you an amazing study plan. And realistic expectations for the exam, which are: read this book once. Then, read it again twice - this time highlighting and taking notes. Next, take all the practice tests. And finally, go take the test - and you will pass with flying colors. This is super fair. In fact, if you didn’t pass, it would be impressive.
Again, DionTraining provides a good overview of what is covered on the exam. But not how those topics work. So you are actually looking to LEARN the topic of networking, then I feel DionTraining the wrong path. You may pass the certification, sure… but you won’t know and understand as much. In my opinion, With Mike, you will learn and come to understand every crumb. You will understand it inside and out. And you’ll feel confident in that.

Review: I have held at least 12 tech certifications in my career, with some of them having been passed more than once due to renewal requirements. I have worked in user and Windows server support for 15 of the last 20 years. I scored 777 on the exam today using the exact same method as I did when I took the exam two versions prior. I used just the Mike Meyer's book. I scored 860 on that exam. The current exam is more difficult for two reasons. One, there is more material to cover. Two, additional elements added to the exam raise the complexity and difficulty. I studied more than 50 hours in total, counting the "free" online components.

I have a standard study routine for exams. I Make two passes on the material, if using one book, and one pass if using two, or more. If I think the exam is easier I use one book. I then review areas I am weaker in and take a few sample exams. I review weak areas again, if needed. I do not attempt to master every area. My rule is 90% competency on 90% of the material and 50% on 10% of the material. I always expect to have some weakness due to lack of experience or just not fully grasping the material. Trying to master everything will greatly expand the amount of time needed.

I found the book to be lacking in some areas.
1. It does not go into enough detail to have a good grasp of how VLANs are used. It explains some of the configuration but doesn't give example networks or scenarios that would help reinforce this concept. I think this section was only 10 -12 pages.
2. There needs to be more examples of fully fleshed out networks with routers, switches, VLANs, servers, and various types of clients that use wired and wireless. This alone could be a separate chapter.

My recommendations for other test takers.
1. If you have several years with networking then this book should be sufficient. You may want to look for some additional material that tests on network layouts if don't configure switches and routers very often.
2. If you have little to no experience with networks, especially router and switch configurations, then you should have at least two material sources. Consider this book, possibly a second book, scenario-based network layout software (Preferably drag and drop that shows where and why changes need to be made for mistakes.), maybe some video instruction, and possibly additional test exams.

Review: I have been having trouble sleeping for the last 4 years. This has affected all aspects of my life up until a couple of years ago. I found a Cisco ASA manual in a 2nd hand books store and started to read it. It took me 11 times longer to read that book than any other book as well as making me want to take more naps than usual. At first I wasn't sure what the deal was until I realized that the subject matter was the key. I picked up a Windows Server 2012 Certification study guide and found similar results. This book seemed large enough to sufficiently bore me to death Steven King and Dean Koontz have nothing on Technology Certification Writers. I can blast through a Koontz book in a couple of days, but an All-In-One Manual about a Network + certification takes quite a bit longer as well as providing the extra added bonus of lethargy and malaise - making me more tired and physically drained for lack of better wording. I found this to be helpful in my quest for sleep and restfulness. It appears that I can read only 5-10 pages of this book to start to really feel tired. I like the way this author phrases his thoughts and ideas with real world data. I enjoy the insight he shares with the audience and provides scenarios for familiarity and depth. It is a good book and I recommend it to purveyors of Monster and Redbull drinks. Please don't ingest these drinks after 3PM unless you work nights. Peace
