Review: I don't usually read books about WWII because family members served overseas in the war and as a child I heard so much firsthand. This book, however, was a horrible and wonderful, deeply touching, and totally unexpected telling of the fate of the Jews in the war. The author takes you into the minds of the characters and you see that they are like us, both certain and vacillating, unsure of what to do. So many times I wanted to reach into the story and say, "Do that!" or "Don't do that!"
This story has a twist, however - a golem. A golem is a mythical creature that I usually thought of as a male, but this golem is a woman who tries to fulfil her mission against terrible odds.
This is a book that stays with you, that reaches into your heart, into your soul, and into your mind. It makes you ask; can this happen again? Can one group of people want to wipe out another group? As I write this the Ukraine war is raging and one man, Putin, has destroyed Ukrainian cities and killed 7000 civilians - over 400 of them children. And, it hasn't just happened in Europe; it has happened in Afghanistan, Yemen, Congo, Nigeria, Syria, and Iraq, - at times with the help of the United States. Yes, it can happen again, only this time other nations have stepped up to try to stop the carnage in the Ukraine. Did we learn anything from Hitler and WWII? Although I wish it were so, the answer is probably not.

Review: I'm going to speak in vagaries to avoid any spoilers. This book is a roller coaster of emotion and experience, from joy to despair, from marvel to horror. Things that I knew, intellectually, about the Holocaust and hidden/saved children were exposed as superficial and sanitized, compared to the naked and ugly truth. Yes, this is a work of fiction, but its seed was germinated by the story and memories of a real survivor of the Holocaust. The novel is enriched by the deeply detailed research, and of course, it could hardly be an Alice Hoffman narrative without the magical realism that is her trademark.

As I write this, mere minutes after finishing the book, tears are running down my face, and I cannot separate the tears of joy from the tears of horror and sadness. This book will touch you to your very soul; it will put you through the wringer, then flip you over and wring you again. Read it. Don't be afraid to feel everything imaginable. You will know, you will sense, early on, who will remain standing and who will perish, though you will likely be wrong about one or two of them. Take this amazing journey; you won't regret it.

(There is a list of resources at the end of the book; I've added them to my reading list in order to learn more about the actual events that inspired this amazing narrative. I know they will be difficult reads, but it's our duty to read about this terrible time in history so that we can continue to bear witness as the number of survivors dwindles and Holocaust deniers grow loud and insistent.)

Title: Hanni, Ettie, Ava and Lea

Review: This is a story of great love, great loss, forgiveness and redemption between these women and those they have loved on their journey of life during the throws of WWII. It is part historical fiction and part mysticism perfectly blended in the telling. It is a beautifully written story of a very tragic time in the history of our world. This is a story that any lover of history needs to read. I cannot describe the specifics of the book as that would be an injustice to the author and those reading this review. I can only say it is one of the most beautifully written books full of imagery and color and life and love.

Review: In the interest of full disclosure, Alice Hoffman is at the top of my list of favorite authors. The World That We Knew reminded me why. Painstakingly researched and beautifully written, the novel is set against the backdrop of a world caught in the grip of WWII and the Nazi’s reign of terror. Interweaving magical realism, mysticism, and Jewish folklore with historical events, Hoffman populates the novel with characters who will tug at your heart as they make unimaginable sacrifices in their fight to survive. The World That We Knew explores the power of a mother’s love and what it means to be human. A mesmerizing read.

Review: A story of love, despair and victory. As the Nazi hate of the Jews intensifies and takes on it's abhorrent march toward the extinction of a whole race and religion the love of family becomes triumphant and struggles to overcome hate and fear. There are courageous people who fight against the force of evil and ultimate prevail.

A poetic telling of loves triumph over evil.

Review: Alice Hoffman writes of a sordid time of history and combines it with magical wishes. We all wish that a magical albeit sinful creation could find us and make our tragedies go away. Plus, in Ava she has created the embodiment of love which is what we all live and strive for. I was enchanted by the character development as well as the interweaving with history and Judaism. Truly a book to be treasured.
