Title: Not What I Hoped For
Date: Reviewed in the United States on September 21, 2019
Review: I was really looking forward to the arrival of this book. I assumed it would provide interesting information on the state of scientific research on various genetic and environmental influences on human thought and behavior. I assumed that having been written by a scientist, the book would present an unbiased look at different interpretations of research data. Instead bias is so pervasive, the author actually advocates how we should think and behave.
Does the following research sound reasonable without comment by the author? The characteristics of liberals, and children who grew up to be liberals, was assessed as resourceful, confident, creative. The characteristics of conservatives, and children who grew up to be conservatives, was assessed to be fearful, deviant, anxious, disrespectful and rigid. Independents, however, may have a better balance of fear and rationality. One wonders how natural selection during two million years of evolution since Homo habilis created the segment of rigid distrustful deviants when the more balanced type could have been selected.
A reader may wonder, "How can curious, creative, resourceful people be expected to get along with rigid, fearful, disrespectful people?" Not to worry, it turns out we need each other - with their oversized amygdala fear centers, conservatives are excellent at detecting threats, while liberals with their larger anterior cingulate cortex are excellent in assessing threats. One political group detects problems, and the other group assesses them. Voila, a reason why we should love each other.
The topic of why billions of people and all human cultures have beliefs in the supernatural gets 4 1/2 pages of text. Sullivan says, "Despite being born atheists, most of us seem unusually receptive to religious indoctrination, as if we're built with a socket that spiritual appliances can plug into." (p. 256). A reader may wonder whether we are really born atheists or whether we are born with a search engine called the brain.
It is not that the research presented in the book is not interesting, it is that the "selected" research data is presented as infallible truth - the one true interpretation of everything - that is the disappointment.
The conclusion to the religion section is headed ," What should we believe?" After spending 4 1/2 pages debunking religious beliefs, Sullivan says, "We would be better off if we stop clinging to our beliefs, which are like anchors that hold us down . . . Let's leave our children with a greener mind as well as a greener planet." (p. 268) (That stance sure worked out well for the Soviet Union.) Among philosophical flaws, that's quite a dismissal of the teachings of Jesus, Buddha, and Socrates.
Ultimately we are urged to change our small minded ways (most of which are not our fault) and choose enlightenment. Unfortunately research suggests we don't have free will and are not really conscious.

Title: Bill Sullivan's PLEASED TO MEET ME allows us to understand the world, beginning with ourselves
Date: Reviewed in the United States on August 6, 2019
Review: I think we have all been in situations where we have either wondered why someone has done something, or quite frankly while WE have done something. In reading PLEASED TO MEET ME by Bill Sullivan I found not just the world a little easier to understand but even myself!
The book looks at the role that genes and the forces inside of us dictate what we do, what we become and how we react to situations. Sure we have to be responsible for our actions, but this book and the research Sullivan has conducted reminds us that some things might be a little more difficult to get our minds around than others.
If you are looking for a book that helps you to see yourself differently and the world that you find yourself in then this book is definitely one you ought to consider. It's quite the conversation piece and is sure to be something you can refer back to from time to time.

Title: Couldnβt see the information for the pop culture references
Date: Reviewed in the United States on August 16, 2019
Review: I made it through about a chapter of this and literally returned it for a refund, which I never do. But the information seemed to be delivered in a very light handed way, lighter than Iβm used to, although Iβm not looking for scholarly. But the pop-culture references, and I mean 3 to 4 at least per page, weβre just obnoxious and over the top to the point of unreadability. To the author, not everyone is going to get these references. In my opinion this kind of writing belongs in an online magazine or blog, not a book that you pay money for. The editor should have throttled this kind of silliness.

Title: Waste of time
Date: Reviewed in the United States on November 21, 2019
Review: I spotted the book on the shelf and jumped at it for the title because it implied the answer to "me". Pretty misleading. In reading it, I stopped many times to make sure I wasn't reading fiction because of his constant jokes throughout. They were funny, I'll give him that, but a little too much to be taken seriously. Nothing was definite and conclusive and the studies that were chosen were mostly skewed and subjective. The writer came from an atheist liberal standing and pushed away anything to do with spirituality because it's all the genes and chemicals within the body. We're just a physical hunk of skin, organs, bulk, and genes and nothing more. How depressing. It reminded me of the old story about the guy who spent most of his life seeking "the meaning of life". Finally after hearing of the person who knew the meaning of life, he traveled thousands of pain staking miles until he arrived where the Nobleman resided who knew the meaning of life. He asked the Nobleman, "What is the meaning of life?" The Nobleman answered by saying (the line is adjusted per the book), "The meaning is all within the genes, microbes, adenosine, serotonin, DNA, dopamine, etc." The traveler looked at the Nobleman in a confused fashion and asked, "Is that it?". The Nobleman replied, "Isn't it?"

Title: Caution -- most of Chapter 9, is author's personal, left-wing-atheist opinion
Date: Reviewed in the United States on October 1, 2019
Review: The first 8 chapters of this book are a good introduction into the genetics and epigenetic of human behavior. Scientifically-literate readers can enjoy and will learn quite a bit about some of the research underway on this subject. The author seriously damages the book by launching into his own personal opinions and biases in chapter 9. To his credit, he admits in the beginning that he is left-wing, but not that he is a zealot for atheism. His book would have been mush more powerful without the anti-religious and anti-conservative screed in chapter 9. -- I am a PhD scientist.

Title: Coulda been a 5 star but..
Date: Reviewed in the United States on November 23, 2019
Review: I loved the first half of this book. Good information, presented well, amusing, fascinating. Somewhere deeper in, this author goes off into his political philosophies. That would be forgivable, but merely unfortunate, but because he tries to wrap his philosophies of politics and religion in science, to me he commits scientific sin.
I give this book a C, but thinking about it, it's really a C minus at best. Enjoy the first half of the book. I did. But the back half is just a thinly disguised rant. The style there is recognizable from Fox news and CNN. The opinions obscure the few facts revealed to the point one can't get enough real information to be worth it
