When it comes to internet scams, there are hundreds of millions of dollars lost every year, and with the convenience of online payments, it’s never been easier to scam people out of their money. Unfortunately, getting scammed isn’t always an avoidable situation; but if you can learn how to spot the most common scams and avoid them, you can protect yourself from the fraudulent practices that cost people all over the world so much money. This guide will teach you everything you need to know about internet scams and how to get rid of them once and for all.

Stop them before they start

Whether it’s a fake e-mail claiming you’ve won an Amazon gift card or a stock investment that looks too good to be true, there are dozens of scams online. If something seems suspicious, it probably is; there’s no reason for an online retailer to mail you an actual check—all sales are conducted through your chosen method of payment. In fact, if you get any kind of communication from a company asking for your personal information (name, Social Security number and so on), assume it’s a scam.

Never send money over social media

The first rule of thumb when it comes to avoiding scams is never send money over social media. If you’re asked to send cash through Facebook or Instagram, run in the opposite direction. It could mean that a scammer has hijacked your friend’s account, but either way sending cash online is never safe. Remember: no matter how real it looks, if a deal seems too good to be true it probably is. And if anyone ever asks you for money on social media, don’t respond—just report them and block them instead! If someone asks you for money through social media, report and block them immediately.

Report them quickly

If you can identify a spammer quickly, report them immediately through Facebook. There’s usually a link to click on that says Report as Spam. Keep in mind, though, that it can sometimes take up to 30 days for an account to be fully disabled. So what do you do in the meantime?

Tell someone you trust

Once you’ve figured out someone is trying to scam you, it’s important to tell someone who can help. If there’s one thing scammers hate, it’s getting caught. The easiest way for that to happen is for everyone in their life—family, friends, colleagues—to know they’re a fraud. So if you think someone is trying to scam you, talk about it with those around you. They’ll be able to offer advice and come up with a plan of action (and alert authorities if necessary). An honest person isn’t going to mind being called out as long as they know they’re doing something wrong.

Know what to do when it happens to you

If you believe that you have been contacted by a scammer, contact your local authorities, who can help get these swindlers out of business. If you’re in doubt, play it safe and don’t share personal information. Also stay alert—if a friend or colleague tells you they were scammed by someone claiming to be an old friend, trust your instincts and keep in touch with others that may be affected. And if anyone asks for cash using your bank account details or credit card information? Don’t do it!

Avoid scams online in general

The best way to avoid scams is to understand how scams work, and be on guard against potential scams. For example, rather than answering a message out of the blue offering you a share in an inheritance, you should use your common sense and suspect that it could be a scam. If you’re unsure whether something is a scam or not, seek advice from someone you trust and never give away personal information online unless you are sure about who you are giving it to. Also avoid clicking links and opening email attachments from people or companies that you don’t know or trust; if in doubt it’s always better not to click anything at all.

Conclusion

How can we fight scammers? The scammers are always going to be there and as far as I can tell, they always will be. They will keep evolving and finding new ways to attack but their success is determined by how many people fall for it. Your best defense against falling for a scam is knowing what they are capable of, what tactics they use, and understanding that you are dealing with someone who only wants your money. So if you want better odds at avoiding scams don’t get greedy and remember to trust your gut feeling when an offer just feels off.
