महात्मा बुद्ध के समय की बात है। उन दिनों मृत्यु के पश्चात आत्मा को स्वर्ग में प्रवेश कराने के लिए कुछ विशेष कर्मकांड कराये जाते थे। होता ये था कि एक घड़े में कुछ छोटे-छोटे पत्थर डाल दिए जाते और पूजा-हवन इत्यादि करने के बाद उस पर किसी धातु से चोट की जाती, अगर घड़ा फूट जाता और पत्थर निकल जाते तो उसे इस बात का संकेत समझा जाता कि आत्मा अपने पाप से मुक्त हो गयी है और उसे स्वर्ग में स्थान मिल गया है।
