Custom Textbooks for Schools: How to Plan Learning Material Around a Curriculum

Annapurna Publishers

A textbook should do more than cover a subject. It should help students understand concepts in a logical sequence, give teachers a practical resource for classroom instruction and support the learning objectives a school has set for each grade. For schools considering custom educational books, the planning process begins well before printing. The curriculum, students’ age groups, chapter structure, exercises, illustrations and production requirements all need to work together. Working with an experienced school textbook publisher can help schools turn their academic requirements into well-organised learning material. Here are the key considerations for planning a school textbook project.

The first step is to define what the textbook needs to teach. School management, academic coordinators and subject teachers should identify the syllabus, learning objectives, grade level and expected learning outcomes. A clear curriculum map helps determine which topics belong in each chapter, how much space each topic needs and where revision or practice activities should be included. Schools should also identify whether the book needs to follow a prescribed syllabus, support an existing teaching plan or provide supplementary material. These decisions influence the content structure and the amount of customisation required.

2. Use Language That Matches the Students’ Age

The language used in a textbook can make a significant difference to how students engage with a subject. Younger learners generally benefit from short explanations, familiar examples and clear instructions. Older students may be ready for more detailed explanations, subject-specific terminology and activities that require deeper thinking. A textbook should introduce new concepts at an appropriate pace rather than overwhelm students with unfamiliar terms. Examples, definitions and instructions should be reviewed for clarity and consistency. Teachers can play an important role here. Their classroom experience helps identify where students commonly struggle and which explanations or examples may make a topic easier to understand.

3. Plan Chapters, Exercises and Assessments Together

A good chapter structure gives students a clear path through the topic. Depending on the subject and grade, a chapter might begin with an introduction, followed by explanations, examples, activities, practice questions and a short recap. Exercises should support the learning objectives rather than simply fill space. Schools can consider a mix of recall questions, application-based problems, activities and revision exercises suited to the subject. Before the manuscript is finalised, academic coordinators should review the sequence of chapters and check whether the content, examples and exercises provide suitable coverage of the curriculum.

4. Use Illustrations and Layouts with a Purpose

Illustrations, diagrams, tables and photographs can help explain concepts that are difficult to communicate through text alone. Their purpose should be educational, not merely decorative. For younger grades, visual examples may support recognition and understanding. In subjects such as science, mathematics and geography, a clear diagram or labelled illustration can help explain a process, relationship or concept. The design also needs to leave enough room for comfortable reading, handwritten answers where required and clear separation between explanations and exercises. Consistent headings, typography and page layouts make the book easier for students and teachers to use.

Once the content and design are ready, the textbook should be checked carefully. Review the manuscript for factual accuracy, spelling, grammar, consistency of terminology, exercise answers and alignment with the intended curriculum. A proof review should also check page numbering, diagrams, captions, tables and the placement of illustrations. Errors that are easy to correct during review can become more difficult and expensive to fix after printing. Schools should approve the final content and layout before production begins. Planning the review process early can help avoid last-minute changes and delays.

6. Plan Printing and Production Requirements

The production plan depends on the intended use of the book. Schools should consider the number of copies required, book size, paper, binding, colour requirements and the date by which the books are needed. If textbooks are required for multiple grades, it may help to plan each title as a separate part of the project, with clear approval and production milestones. Schools should also discuss the expected schedule and print specifications with the publisher before confirming the project. A well-defined brief makes it easier to coordinate content development, design, proofing and school book printing.

For schools planning curriculum-based learning material, choosing a publishing partner is an important decision. The partner needs to understand that an educational book is not simply a printed document: content, presentation, accuracy and production all contribute to its usefulness in the classroom.
