Vaibhav Sooryavanshi's much-awaited return to India's playing XI ended in disappointment during the second T20I against New Zealand at Hagley Oval in Christchurch on October 24, 2026. The 15-year-old left-handed batter managed just four runs off eight deliveries as India chased a target of 181 runs in the five-match T20I series.

Despite receiving a warm welcome from the Christchurch crowd, the young sensation could not deliver the explosive performance that fans had hoped to see. However, India's eventual four-wicket victory ensured that his brief innings did not affect the team's result, as the visitors secured a 2-0 lead in the series.

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Scores Just Four Runs Against New Zealand

The spotlight was firmly on Vaibhav Sooryavanshi ahead of the NZ vs IND 2nd T20I. Cricket fans were eager to watch the teenage batter showcase his aggressive batting style against New Zealand's bowling attack.

Sooryavanshi entered India's playing XI as a replacement for the injured Ishan Kishan. However, rather than opening the innings, he was promoted to the No. 3 position, with Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma retaining their opening partnership.

The youngster struggled to find his rhythm during his short stay at the crease. He faced eight deliveries and scored only four runs without hitting a boundary. His innings ended when he attempted to attack a delivery outside off stump from New Zealand pacer Nathan Smith. The ball took the edge, and Daryl Mitchell completed the catch.

The dismissal ended Sooryavanshi's first appearance of the series earlier than expected.

Why Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Was Included in India's Playing XI

Sooryavanshi's inclusion came after Ishan Kishan suffered a low-grade right adductor strain during the opening T20I. The injury created an opportunity for the young batter to return to the Indian side.

India's management decided to retain Samson and Abhishek as the opening pair, giving Sooryavanshi the responsibility of batting at No. 3. This was an interesting adjustment for a youngster best known for his fearless approach at the top of the order.

The decision also demonstrated India's willingness to provide opportunities to emerging talent while maintaining the team's established batting structure.

Sooryavanshi had previously attracted attention through his performances in domestic cricket and the Indian Premier League. His aggressive stroke play and ability to score quickly have made him one of India's most exciting young batting prospects.

New Zealand Bowlers Keep the Youngster Under Pressure

New Zealand's bowling attack prevented Sooryavanshi from settling into his innings. The teenager initially struggled to find gaps and accelerate the scoring rate against the disciplined bowling.

He received a reprieve when an edge off Michael Bracewell's bowling fell safely after a missed fielding opportunity. However, he could not capitalise on that second chance and was dismissed in the following over.

Nathan Smith's breakthrough was important for New Zealand, as removing the young batter helped the hosts maintain pressure during India's chase.

Although Sooryavanshi's performance fell short of expectations, one disappointing innings should not define his potential. At 15, he is still developing the experience required to handle different bowling styles and match situations at the highest level.

India Win the Match Despite Sooryavanshi's Early Dismissal

India faced a challenging chase after New Zealand posted 180/5 in 20 overs. Glenn Phillips scored 70 runs, while Bevon Jacobs contributed 58 to help the hosts build a competitive total.

India lost wickets at regular intervals and found themselves under pressure during the middle overs. Mitchell Santner claimed four wickets, putting New Zealand in a strong position to defend their total.

However, Tilak Varma's unbeaten 51 off 26 balls and Nitish Kumar Reddy's unbeaten 26 off 13 deliveries guided India to 181/6 in 19.5 overs. The visitors won by four wickets with one ball remaining.

in the NZ vs IND 2nd T20I was not the comeback he or his supporters had hoped for. Nevertheless, the young batter's potential remains significant, and further opportunities could help him develop his game at the international level.

India's victory was a reminder of the team's batting depth, with Tilak Varma and Nitish Kumar Reddy stepping up under pressure. As the series continues, attention will remain on whether Sooryavanshi gets another opportunity to demonstrate his talent against New Zealand.
