Patrick Omorodion’s Allegations Against the NSC Are Baseless, Misleading, and Unprofessional

As the Media Aide on Strategic Communication to the Director General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Hon. Bukola Olopade, my attention was naturally drawn to a recent article by a former spokesman of the NBBF Patrick Omorodion. The piece, which alleges widespread manipulation of the upcoming Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) elections by the NSC, is a disappointing exercise in conspiracy theory rather than factual journalism. However, because this narrative is being pushed into the public domain, it is important to step in and set the record straight for the Nigerian basketball family and sports lovers at large. 

The most ridiculous claim in Mr. Omorodion’s article is the idea that the NSC, under the leadership of Chairman Mallam Shehu Dikko and DG Hon. Bukola Olopade, is colluding with outgoing NBBF President Musa Kida to install a surrogate. Let us be absolutely clear: the NSC is a regulatory body, not a political godfather. The current leadership at the Commission is entirely focused on infrastructural rebirth, athlete welfare, and systemic reforms across all sports. The NSC does not meddle in the internal democratic processes of the NBBF, nor does it have any vested interest in dictating who leads the basketball federation. 

Perhaps the most important point being lost in the current noise is that the NSC is not supposed to decide who becomes NBBF president. Its core responsibility is to ensure that Nigerian basketball operates within the framework of Nigerian sports administration and the rules of the relevant international body. The actual choice of NBBF leadership belongs strictly to the recognized electoral stakeholders. That is precisely why the NSC's insistence on due process is so critical. 

There is a significant difference between demanding transparency and recklessly accusing the NSC of manipulating an election. If evidence genuinely exists that delegates are being unlawfully removed, state associations are being altered for electoral purposes, or voting rights are being deliberately transferred, then those claims should be properly established through credible documents and appropriate statutory channels. 

Instead, the NSC has chosen to stand behind a simple principle: respect FIBA, respect the rules, and allow the election to produce the next NBBF leadership. That neutral position does not make Musa Kida untouchable, nor does it determine who should win the election. It simply ensures that the current administration is allowed to complete the mandate recognized by FIBA and that the transition takes place through the prescribed process.

Mr. Omorodion also took issue with the NBBF's decision to hold its elective congress in Yola, Adamawa State, comparing it to past football elections and framing it as a plot to disenfranchise voters. This shows a deliberate ignorance of how sports federations operate. The choice of venue for any federation’s congress is a statutory decision made by its board, based on its own constitution. Yola itself cannot be presented as proof of electoral manipulation. A national sports federation belongs to the entire country, and there is no rule that says its congress must permanently take place in Abuja or Lagos. Yola is a major, peaceful Nigerian city, and moving sporting events and administrative meetings outside the Federal Capital Territory is actually a standard practice that promotes national inclusion. The NSC does not pick venues for federation elections. 

Equally laughable is the allegation that state chairmen are being uprooted and replaced with "stooges" through the dark arts of state governors and NSC officials. State basketball representatives and their voting rights are determined by local democratic structures and electoral guidelines. The NSC has absolutely no constitutional power to withdraw voting rights from any state chairman or hand them to "unknown persons," as the writer vaguely claims. The delegate list is a product of the federation’s rules, not a script written in the NSC offices. 

The ongoing reforms championed by Mallam Shehu Dikko and Hon. Bukola Olopade are designed specifically to help Nigerian sports breathe the new life that Mr. Omorodion claims to advocate for. Accusing the very people fixing the system of thwarting change is both unfair and blatantly false. We urge the basketball family and sports-loving Nigerians to ignore these manufactured controversies and focus on a peaceful electoral process, while reminding our friends in the media that a pen should be used for verified facts, not baseless political mudslinging. 

Mr. Patrick Omorodion is a senior colleague with years of experience who should ordinarily thoroughly verify facts, investigate opposition rumors, and have made himself available in Yola as an eyewitness before making such a baseless accusation.
