Moving Beyond the Blame Game: Why It Is Time to Let Amaju Pinnick Be

The recent string of disappointments in Nigerian football—most notably the Super Falcons’ poor outing at the last WAFCON and their failure to qualify for the 2027 FIFA Women's World Cup, closely following the Super Eagles' absence from Qatar 2022 and USA 2026—has understandably sparked intense debate, criticism, and calls for reform. 

While such discourse is a healthy part of sports culture, a recent open letter directed to the Chief of Staff to the President, Rt. Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, by Arabinrin Aderonke, took a rather unnecessary detour. The letter focused heavily on former NFF President Amaju Melvin Pinnick, operating on the unfounded assumption that the Federal Government was plotting to dissolve the current NFF board, set up a Normalisation Committee, and appoint Pinnick to lead it. The National Sports Commission has since unequivocally denied these rumors.

Beyond these baseless assumptions, the letter highlighted a troubling trend: the relentless attempt to scapegoat Pinnick for virtually every misfortune in Nigerian football, past and present, painting him as unfit for public responsibility. It is perfectly fine to set an agenda for sports reform, but dragging an individual into a picture they did not pose for simply to validate a narrative is fundamentally unfair.

In public service, individuals arrive, make their contributions, and eventually move on. That is exactly what Amaju Pinnick has done. 

Since passing the baton of NFF leadership, Pinnick has firmly turned the page. He is deeply entrenched in CAF and FIFA affairs, securing influential roles and cultivating powerful relationships within the global football community. He is certainly not lurking in the shadows, waiting to seize control of Nigerian football again.

Outside of sports administration, Pinnick oversees substantial private interests spanning oil and gas, construction, agriculture, hospitality, and entertainment. Through his Brownhill Foundation, he continues to drive quiet philanthropy—funding scholarships, upgrading sports facilities at institutions like Hussey College and Government College in Ughelli, and donating an e-Library to the University of Benin. 

Put simply: Pinnick does not need Nigerian football to survive. The mantle of leadership has been passed, and it is now the responsibility of the current administrators to build upon their inheritance, correct systemic flaws, and drive their own reforms. Furthermore, as a staunch democrat and global football executive, Pinnick would be the last person to advocate for the unconstitutional dismantling of the NFF.

While it is fair to critique Pinnick’s tenure, that judgment must be rooted in context, not selective amnesia. When he assumed office in 2014, he inherited a fragile system that had already suffered massive setbacks, including missing the 2006 World Cup and multiple AFCON tournaments. 

Yes, there were heartbreaks under his watch—the failure to qualify for Qatar 2022 being a major one. But a holistic review of his administration reveals a robust list of achievements:

* Three Women's Africa Cup of Nations titles (2014, 2016, 2018).

* The FIFA U-17 World Cup title in 2015 and an Olympic Bronze medal at Rio 2016.

* Africa U-23 and U-20 Cup of Nations titles, an AFCON bronze, and a CHAN silver medal.

* Seamlessly qualifying for the Russia 2018 FIFA World Cup with two games to spare.

While the Qatar 2022 miss was painful, it is intellectually dishonest to blame the NFF President for on-pitch execution. Pinnick was an administrator, not a striker. For that decisive playoff against Ghana, the administrative boxes were checked: player bonuses were paid upfront, a chartered flight was provided, and top-tier accommodation was secured. When the whistle blew, the outcome was in the hands of the technical crew and the players. 

Away from the pitch, Pinnick arguably spearheaded the most financially ambitious era in NFF history. Operating during a highly turbulent period plagued by court battles and institutional instability, his board actively pursued private-sector partnerships to reduce reliance on government subventions. 

He championed corporate governance by bringing in PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) for independent auditing and engaging Financial Derivatives as financial advisers. Regardless of personal opinions about him, instituting professional financial structures was a massive step forward. It is also a matter of public record that Pinnick waived a substantial portion of his own presidential allowances during his tenure.

Globally, Pinnick leveraged his network to secure influential CAF and FIFA committee appointments for several Nigerians. Cultivating this kind of administrative soft power is something every serious footballing nation strives to do. 

On the developmental front, Pinnick’s board laid solid groundwork. The establishment of the NFF/Zenith Bank Future Eagles Championship (U-13 and U-15) created a sustainable pipeline for young talent. This initiative directly fed into the squads that competed in the 2019 Africa U-17 Cup of Nations and the FIFA U-17 World Cup. Additionally, countless coaches, referees, and administrators were sent abroad for capacity-building programs and internships. 

Amaju Pinnick did not solve every problem in Nigerian football, and his administration had its flaws. However, to argue that he did nothing—or to blame him for the current administration's struggles—is a disservice to the facts. 

It is time to focus on the future, demand accountability from those currently in charge, and let Amaju Pinnick be.
