The U.S. Automatic Birthright Citizenship Cancellation: Signaling a New World Order

On Monday, January 20, 2025, President Donald Trump, on his first day back in office, signed 50 executive orders, including one specifically targeting the automatic granting of citizenship to children born in the United States to undocumented immigrants and lawful non-permanent residents, including tourists and students.

A few weeks ago, I discussed this possibility with a family, predicting that this might be one of the Trump administration’s initial moves. They vehemently disagreed, insisting it was impossible. While some have argued that an executive order cannot override a constitutional provision like the 14th Amendment, which guarantees birthright citizenship, it is important to note that such orders remain enforceable until overturned by Congress or the courts, if they are ever overturned.

However, the issue goes beyond legality. This executive order reflects a larger shift in global dynamics, a "new world order." Protectionism has become the prevailing trend, with Western nations prioritizing their citizens, safeguarding borders, and focusing on self-preservation over global openness. Migration from underdeveloped or developing countries is increasingly scrutinized.

It’s worth considering how this shift has evolved. There was a time when global movement was far less restrictive; for example, Nigerians once traveled to the UK without visas. As nations began redefining their sovereignty and interests, immigration laws tightened to protect their territories. The cancellation of automatic birthright citizenship isn’t unique to the U.S.; similar policies already exist in the UK and parts of Europe. Canada may soon follow, as conservative forces push for stricter immigration measures.

What we’re witnessing is a redefinition of national priorities. A phrase that resonates deeply with me is: ‘When you show up in a room, if you're not at the table, you're on the menu.’ For Africans, the historical scars of slavery, colonialism, and exploitation are no longer valid excuses. It is time to adapt to this new world order by building strong nations, holding our leaders accountable, and shifting focus from looking to the West for salvation, whether through individual migration or foreign aid. Instead, we must contribute value and strategically position ourselves on the global stage.

Value exchange, not pity or benevolence, is now the currency of relevance. As the saying goes, ‘Power does not shift except for superior power.’ The path forward demands resilience, strategic planning, and a relentless focus on bringing undeniable value to the table.
