     In his recent State of the Nation Address (SONA), President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. mentioned a critical issue – the prohibition of Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators (POGOs). This decisive position, aimed at tackling the various challenges associated with POGOs, reflects a notable shift in national policy that emphasizes the country's long-term stability and security over immediate economic benefits.

     In 2023, POGOs, which were once regarded as a thriving industry promising substantial revenue through taxes and fees according to the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corp (PAGCOR), have increasingly represented a range of societal problems. These issues include rising crime rates, economic instability, and strained diplomatic relations with countries like China, which has openly expressed its disapproval of online gambling operations targeting its citizens.

     In the latest June 14, 2024 episode of “Kapuso Mo, Jessica Soho,” it was revealed that out of around 200 POGO businesses operating in the Philippines, only 60 have a proper license. This discovery underlines an alarming problem of unregulated and ignored laws in the industry.

     The economic appeal of POGOs is clear. At their height, these operators added billions of pesos to the national treasury, providing P5 billion in PAGCOR revenue from legitimate POGOs in 2023. However, the negative consequences related to their existence have begun to overshadow these advantages. There have been numerous reports of money laundering, human trafficking, and other criminal activities that have tainted the industry's image, such as the rescue of 1,090 Asian people in Mabalacat, Pampanga, on May 6, 2023. These individuals were recruited to run online scams and, in the latest issue of the Philippine Star on March 14, 2024, authorities raided a POGO hub in Bamban, Tarlac, on complaints of human trafficking, rescuing at least 875 people, including 504 foreigners, with the POGO linked to Bamban Mayor Alice Guo. Additionally, the surge of foreign workers has led to social tensions and put a burden on local resources, fostering an environment of resentment and unrest.

     President Marcos's push to ban POGOs is not just a stopgap measure but a proactive step to protect the nation's integrity. It showcases an awareness that sustainable economic growth cannot come at the cost of social harmony and security. By advocating for the termination of POGO operations, the administration is placing the well-being of its citizens first and upholding the rule of law.

     Critics argue that the abrupt removal of POGOs could lead to economic downturns, job losses, and reduced government revenue. While these concerns are valid, they also present an opportunity for the government to shift towards more sustainable and ethical sources of income. Investing in technology, infrastructure, and education can create new avenues for employment and economic growth that do not compromise the country's social cohesion.

     As the Philippines transitions away from relying on POGOs, there is a pressing opportunity to refocus on a more sustainable and industry - agriculture. The agricultural sector, particularly in grains and vegetable production, is vital for the country’s food security and economic stability. With over 5.56 million Filipinos engaged in agriculture as reported by the Philippine Statistics Authority, compared to a national population of approximately 119 million, this sector represents a significant portion of the workforce.

     During the pandemic, farmers played a crucial role in maintaining food supplies despite numerous challenges such as limited access to markets, economic impact of lockdowns, and supply chain disruptions. Their dedication underscores the importance of revitalizing agriculture—not only to fill the economic gap left by POGOs but also to support and honor those who are essential in feeding the nation.

     Investing in modern farming techniques and promoting agriculture as a respected profession can create meaningful employment opportunities and contribute to long-term national stability and prosperity. By shifting focus to agriculture, we can provide viable livelihoods for those who previously depended on POGOs for income and ensure a more sustainable future for the country.

     Hence, this move can restore international confidence in the Philippines as a safe and stable investment destination. By taking a firm stand against illegal activities associated with POGOs, the administration sends a clear message to the global community that it is committed to upholding high standards of governance and law enforcement.
