Lucas Paqueta breaks silence on probe into betting allegations and Man City transfer links

West Ham and Brazil playmaker Lucas Paqueta has been asked publicly about the betting investigation into him and his continued links to Pep Guardiola's Premier League champions Manchester City

Lucas Paqueta has broken his silence on the betting probe which scuppered any chance of a move to Manchester City last summer.

The West Ham playmaker, 26, remains under investigation for alleged gambling breaches. But after being left out of three Brazil squads in a row, he is back in the international fold for Saturday’s friendly against England at Wembley.

He has been recalled by his former coach at Flamengo, Dorival Junior, who took over as national team boss in January. Speaking in a press conference, Paqueta said he had been instructed “not to comment” on the betting investigation for legal reasons, although he did provide a response regarding his state of mind and what effect the probe had had on his performances in claret and blue.

He told the press on Wednesday: “It’s been seven months and I’m co-operating, doing what’s in my power so that it can be resolved.” Speaking publicly for the first time since the investigation came to light, Paqueta admitted: “In the beginning it was hard. But now I have grown a lot mentally and now I can live with that.

“I have left that behind and I can now focus on my performances. Everything outside of football I left behind. My focus is on training, playing and developing my performances.”

He paid tribute to the Hammers' boss too, adding: “David Moyes has been special for me. I have a good relationship with him. We talked about this. He wanted me on the team because of what I did last season.

“I think it was important because I have grown this season and have got better and better. My evolution was important from last season to this one. Without a shadow of doubt, the support allowed me to leave all this behind, it was essential.”

City remain keen on Paqueta, who will have an £85million buyout clause in his contract kick in from this summer, which means West Ham would not be able to stand in his way if a club matches that figure beyond the end of the current campaign. Having incurred the wrath of some Hammers fans for embracing City boss Pep Guardiola before a game at the London Stadium last year, Paqueta chose his words carefully.

“I have a lot of respect for my club, which is West Ham," he said. "I hope we have a good end to the season. We hope to qualify for Europe again through the Premier League and try to win the Europa League.”

"I’ve been having a very good season and that has helped me a lot in my evolution in the Premier League. So I think that out of respect for them I have to stay focused on my duty at West Ham and keep working."

Paqueta has been a standout performer for West Ham this season in the Premier League and the Europa League. He has been a fan-favourite since his club-record move from Lyon in 2022, helping the club win their first major trophy in 43 years last season. And the Hammers will need him fit and in top form after the international break when they go to Newcastle on Saturday, May 30, before facing off against Bayer Leverkusen in the Europa League quarter-finals next month.
