The world today has been fraught with various calamities and emergencies such as hurricanes, earthquakes, pandemics, and terrorist attacks, among others. In these times of crisis, the swift flow of information plays a significant role in managing the situation. In the past, we solely depended on traditional media outlets such as television, radio, and newspapers to receive the latest updates about calamities. However, the introduction of social media has dramatically transformed this situation. It has become an instrumental tool in facilitating the flow of information during disasters, not only for individuals but also for families, social workers, and government agencies.

One of the primary advantages of social media during a crisis is its instant reach to a massive audience. For instance, in cases of hurricane warnings or any form of impending natural disaster, Facebook and Twitter pages enable people to keep themselves updated. The spread of such information has also allowed social workers to find those in need, monitor damage reports, and communicate with the masses in need. By doing so, families are alerted on possible evacuations and immediate support measures. The presence of various applications has allowed real-time updates that could help concerned people track their loved ones and their situation. These technologies have created a new paradigm for a culture of help during calamities.

In the past, people's understanding of calamities relied on secondhand information provided by traditional media. Often, there was a risk of inaccuracies and false news being reported that could lead to a lot of confusion and harm. In the case of social media, individuals directly affected by calamities have the platform to report accurate information, sharing firsthand experiences and present pictures and videos. Hence, allowing the people and officials responsible for aiding victims to make informed decisions. For instance, governments and officials could utilize this data to gauge the severity of a calamity, allocate resources, and direct aid more efficiently.

Social media platforms have enabled more open lines of communication during calamities, creating opportunities for an active support system. Individuals, families, and authorities are continuously collaborating in helping people in affected areas. More notably, various governments worldwide have made it a priority to disseminate information about natural disasters through their official pages, thereby becoming part of the recovery effort, with easy access to real-time data. They've incorporated an AI-backed technology to send instant alerts to help people take necessary action and avoid or reduce calamities' aftermath. 

Social media has also played a critical role in helping social workers and non-profit organizations to respond quickly during a disaster. For instance, when the devastating Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans in 2005, Twitter was instrumental in connecting the victims to relief organizations. People used Twitter to post information about their needs and to ask for help. Non-profits organizations such as the Red Cross also used social media to raise funds and mobilize resources to aid those affected by the hurricane.

Finally, social media has provided the government with a powerful tool to monitor disasters and disseminate critical information to the public. Government agencies use social media platforms to warn the public of an impending disaster, such as an approaching hurricane or wildfire.
