This morning while I was jogging, I saw a person who was half a kilometer away from me. I estimated that he was running slowly towards me and felt very happy. I thought I should challenge him. After about a kilometer, I had to turn towards my house. I started running faster and soon caught up with him. When I was about 100 feet away from him, I was very happy and excited, and I quickly overtook him.

I said to myself, "Yes I beat him," even though he didn't even know we were racing.

Suddenly, I realized that in my eagerness to beat him, I had gone quite far from the turn to my house. Then I realized that I had lost my inner peace and could not enjoy the greenery and soft rays of the sun falling on the path. I missed the beautiful sound of the birds. My breaths were short and painful and I realized that I had gone too far from my house.

Then I understood that we also have an innate desire to compete in our lives, with our co-workers, neighbors, friends, relatives, and we want to show them that we are better, more successful, or more important than they are. In this pursuit, we lose our peace, the beauty of our surroundings.
