BUILDING A HEALTHY RELATIONSHIP

Every building that is seen and appreciated starts from the foundation and when the foundation is solid the building is firm as well. This is applicable to any relationship wether family, friendship, acquaintanceship, work relationship, romantic relationship or others.

No matter the kind of relationship, persons involved wants to be satisfied with it. This is where healthy relationship comes to play. Healthy relationship involves honesty, trust, respect and open communication between persons.

A Healthy relationship takes the effort of healthy individuals whether male or female. If one is not sound physically, emotionally, mentally, socially and spiritually, that person can not build a healthy relationship. Hence, for the building process to commence effectively, persons involved should be in the right state of health. When this is in place, other requirements follows.

Understanding is key in building a healthy relationship. Persons involved in any relationship must understand that no one is the same. We have our strengths and weaknesses. It is important to know that one’s strength should be encouraged and the person should be helped in his or her weakness.

Communication is another very important aspect when building a healthy relationship.This involves listening and speaking. There should be room for verbal expression, attentiveness not just to words but to non-verbal expressions. This makes persons feel involved in the relationship. Proper communication helps prevent unhealthy arguments, grudge, and resolves unresolved issues which may allow cracks in the walls of a relationship.

The place of trust In building a healthy relationship can not be overemphasized. A girl was standing on a high platform and the father asked her to jump that he was there to catch her. She tried jumping but she had fears of falling. She didn’t jump until the father kept assuring her that he was there to catch her when she jumps. Finally, she jumped and the father was there to catch her.That is trust! She had trust on her father and the father proved that he could be trusted. No matter the relationship between persons, trusting or being trusted feels like having a breath of fresh air. One feels safe.

The place of God should be of uttermost importance in building a healthy relationship. Psalm 127: 1a says, ‘Except the Lord build the house, they labour in vain that build it’. The word of God should be a guiding principle, the map and the compass if any two or more individuals must build a healthy relationship. Failure to do this, like the foolish man who built his house on sand will eventually lead to a total collapse of what is being built.

Healthy relationship is very possible. It begins with a person. Like Neil Clark Warren said, ‘Your relationships can be as healthy as you are’. So stay healthy because a healthy me and a healthy you will create a healthy us. A healthy us will create a healthy relationship and a healthy relationship creates a healthy society at large.
