You can become great or small depending on how mindful you are with your mouth.

Do you know that with your words you can cause things to live and things to die? That your success in life is connected to what you say out of your mouth? Your tongue is the most powerful member of your body. The power of death and life is actually in your mouth.

“A man’s stomach shall be satisfied from the fruit of his mouth; From the produce of his lips he shall be filled. Death and life are in the power of the tongue, And those who love it will eat its fruit. (Proverbs 18:20, 21 NKJV)

One day Jesus cursed a fig tree, saying to it, “No man will eat fruit from you again.” And His disciples heard Him. The next day as they passed by, they exclaimed, “Master, the fig tree you cursed is withered from the roots.” Then Jesus said unto them, “Truly, I say to you, whosoever shall say to this mountain, ‘Be uprooted and cast into the sea and does not doubt in his heart but believes the things he says shall come to pass, he shall have whatsoever he says.’ ” (Mark 11:22-24)

The book of James compares the tongue to the rudder of a ship, the bit in the horse’s mouth, and a small fire started in a forest. With a tiny rudder, a captain controls the direction of a massive ship, and with a tiny bit, the horseman tells the horse where to go and it obeys. And who can deny the destructive power of a little spark of fire set in a forest! The tongue, says James, though tiny, is as powerful and influential in determining the course and destiny of your life as any of these.

That is why Hebrews 10:23 exhorts us to “hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful.” (Hebrews 10:23 NKJV). The word translated “confession” literally means, “to say the same thing.” God wants to give us a glorious future and for us to experience every promise He has made and fulfilled in Christ. And we will, if we yield our tongues to Him and allow Him to bring our tongues under His influence.

Child of God, God has a wonderful plan for your life. The Holy Spirit stands ready to confirm every promise of God made to you and fulfilled in Jesus. The course He has set for you to follow leads to life and more life. But He needs your cooperation because whoever controls your tongue gets to control your life and determine the direction it moves in.

So, let the Word of Christ dwell in you richly. Meditate on His message of love and grace continually and let it fill your heart and mouth daily. By so doing, your tongue will become a fountain of life and you will begin to enjoy the abundant life Jesus died to provide for you.
