Title: Intense, mesmerizing and surprisingly relatable

Review: Fascinating and heart wrenching at times, Renee Linnell's journey is worth your time. It was so intense in it's trajectory, that I stayed up until 3am to finish it. Even without the cult experience, Renee has one of the most interesting lives I've ever heard of. Enter the brainwashing and you have an even more rare story. Yet, her story is surprisingly relatable.

When I began reading The Burn Zone, I did not anticipate finding much in common with her experience. There is no way, I thought, that I can identify with someone who who gets effectively brainwashed by a second rate cult leader that behaves like a toddler. And there were times I became aggravated at her choices and literally wanted to yell at the book, "DON'T DO IT!!!" But the more I read, the more I realized that I have been on that same slippery slope multiple times in my own lifetime...the slope where the seed of self doubt, fear of rejection and desperation for relief take hold. You end up compromising your personal needs and committing to something that undermines your worth and your divine self. And it's really not that big of a stretch from yielding to a bad boyfriend or boss to serving a cult leader...the details are different, but the disempowerment is the same. Renee Linnell unapologetically shares her journey in the most generous and transparent way. It is sad and painfully frustrating at times, but ultimately triumphant and inspiring. And her ultimate discovery and message that the light you seek is within you is one we too easily forget. You cannot help but be grateful that there are people in the world like Renee who are willing to embrace the entirety of their life experience and courageously offer it to the world, and in doing so, create meaningful connections between all of us.

Title: A masterpiece created from the ashes of the fire

Review: One does not often discover such a fresh perspective on an age old phenomenon.
I for one am certainly glad I did.

Having been involved in cultic research and education for several decades, it was a pleasure to be drawn into Renee’s world. She is a terrific storyteller.

When I ask the question “ what kind of people do you think get involved with cults?” I get the stereotypical results like “ they were missing something from their lives”, “they are seekers”, “they are the kind of people who need someone to tell them what to do”.
While all those statements may be true, it is also true that they are just like any of us.
We all have moments when we have experienced all of the above. So there is nothing unusual in that. What is unusual is for those feelings or circumstances to be taken advantage and exploited. Sometimes to unimaginable extremes.

What Renee so intimately reveals in her memoir is so valuable is demonstrating the more important point which I feel is how the purpetrator of betrayal of trust and ego pick-pocketing ply their tradecraft be it knowingly or by rote.

Without an explanation of the dynamics,techniques, or behaviors other then primarily her own, she illustrates the actions and her incredibly intimate responses which while shifting from inspiring to unsettling, abhorrent and back again create a narrative that is equally enjoyable as it is educational.

You may find your self wanting to scream out “get out of the car stupid!!!” Like in a horror movie when the lumbering monster is approaching and the car won’t start. However in the movies it is done for dramatic effect whereas in Renee’s story it is an actual portrayal of her reality at the time.

I know from firsthand experience as well as having listened to hundreds of experiences of others.

I especially liked the lack in her memoir of being an “expose” though it does expose, and lack of sensationalism, yet still being sensational. This is an incredible balance for a writer on this subject to achieve and Renee does it so well in a way that investigative reporters or academics often fall short.

This is a truly personal story told in a uniquely personal way!

Title: An example of exquisite vulnerability

Review: I had the pleasure of meeting Renee in the green room of a morning show we were both doing during our respective book tours, and after watching her segment, couldn't wait to sit down and read her memoir. It was as great as I thought it would be! Renee's ability to dance between taking readers into her journey as it unfolded, and offer moments of reflection from where she is now, is awesome. I could understand why she made the choices she did, and felt like I was talking to a close girlfriend who had been to hell and back - and never lost her sense of humor and charm through the process. I highly recommend.

Title: Seeing through the illusion

Review: One of the things that struck me the most about Renee's epic memoir is that we truly never know what another human being is going through. From the outside what appeared to be a totally charmed life as a bikini model, surfer, world traveler, professional dancer, trust fund baby, party girl was also a life devoid of self-knowledge and desperate for love. Renee shares her vulnerability with radical honesty and a prose that is hard to stop reading.

We never know what another person has been through and how they may be hurting inside. Her story is anyone's story of wanting to be loved and seen, and the things we'll do to get those basic needs met. It's a story of getting lost and waking up. I'm so happy she's come out the other side of her mad journey with the cult masters to share her wild spirit, wonderful humor and deep wisdom with us all.
