Review: I absolutely loved this book. Tim Brady’s writing brings to life a truly remarkable man, a man who is not honored enough in this country. More people need to know his story and it is wonderful that this author is sharing his legacy. However, I am more than a little bothered that a book that is marketed as being well researched, a book with countless footnotes citing sources, was inaccurate at times when using military terminology, but even worse, when providing factual information. For example, an instance that bothers me most is on page 306, when writing about the funeral in July of 1944. Here the author states that Teddy was buried next to his brother. This is absolutely not true. At the time, Quentin was buried in France, but in the location where he was killed in action during WWI in 1918. It was not until much later that his remains were exhumed in order to be buried next to Teddy’s at the American Cemetery in Normandy. This is common knowledge for anyone who has studied, even briefly, Teddy Roosevelt, Jr. I believe the author made an assumption because they are currently resting next to each other, but his version is incorrect...and honestly, much less poetic. It bothers me that a fact, a well known fact, was left unchecked. This is just one example of the inaccuracies in a book where, people reading it will take every word written as fact. I believe, if someone engages in the task of telling a person’s story in order to leave a lasting legacy, there is a responsibility to get it right...especially when claiming to have spent the time researching thoroughly.

P.S. I tried to contact the author to pass this along and...guess what? The online address, listed on the book jacket, where one is to “visit him online” is incorrect as well and cannot be found when entered into a search bar! Haha

Title: An Excellent Telling of an Extraordinary Man

Review: Tim Brady provides a wonderful narrative of a most remarkable man, Theodore Roosevelt Junior, the son of one of America's most beloved president's, Theodore Roosevelt. The title of the book could have included The Rough Riders' son, as Teddy Jr. was himself a rough rider possessing the same noble virtues of his father, in addition to being an American hero in his own right. He was a fearless combatant, patriot, explorer, inspirational leader, successful businessman, though frustrated at lack of political success. He was the Oyster Bay Roosevelt that was thwarted by the Hyde Park Roosevelt in his quest for political success. But this did not deter his love of country. His three brother also served their country all aspiring to meet their father's lofty expectations.
Determination is a quality that one can easily associate with Teddy Jr., from his days as an undersized college football player to his final days walking with a cane in guiding and inspiring troops on the beaches of Normandy. He was fortunate to have married a loving and caring wife, Eleanor, who was always there for him. This is an informative and inspiring book which I highly recommend to all lovers of this great country.

Review: Writing a book on Ted Roosevelt is a huge challenge. He was a big figure, but not as big as his dad (who is?). He had some amazing adventures and was an incredible war hero but he also made some enormous blunders. How do you keep all of that together, without making him sound practically perfect, or attacking him as if he was a giant failure? This books succeeds admirably. Ted Roosevelt lived a fascinating life and this books tracks it so well. The book summarizes it well: TR wasn't much of a soldier but a great politician while Ted was a great soldier and not much of a politician! Don't be put off by some reviewers quibbling about details like what size gun the Nazis were shooting in a battle. It won't detract from what this book tells you about Ted Roosevelt! No one fully understands his amazing father without this book because you need to know TR's son to really know TR!

Review: This is the third book I've read about Theodore Roosevelt, Jr., one of American history's more underappreciated characters. This was, in my opinion, the best of the three I have read. While the author obviously liked and respected his "character", he wasn't afraid to report on the man, warts and all. Yes, he was outshone by the "Big 3" of the Roosevelt family, TR, FDR and Eleanor, but Ted had no reason to feel out of the spotlight. He had adventures enough to fill a half dozen biographies. The book was well-written but authoritative.

The reason for the relatively low 3-star evaluation is that the author is one of the modern group of writers that apparently doesn't take the time to research military terms. After while, it got to be a little irritating ... he describes a "77mm" gun used to destroy a German tank, a "47mm" anti-tank gun (the Americans used 75mm and 37mm guns respectively). Brady apparently wasn't even quite sure how Ted's beloved 26th Infantry Regiment was organized, doing back and forth between describing it as a "regiment (correct) and a "battalion (often describing it as the "26th Battalion").

Review: This book has a great wealth of historical information, besides an excellent biography of TR Jr. The writing makes stuff that could be boring, interesting information. The man was the real deal in his own right, and the writing makes the case for this clearly. I'm familiar with a lot of military history, and am a member of the American Legion, and was unfamiliar with most of the remarkable exploits of Ted Roosevelt. An unusual and rewarding book.

Review: This book is great reading about the son of President Teddy Roosevelt. Although there is very little written about him, Ted Roosevelt was a WWI and WWII hero, and a prosperous business man and public servant between the wars. When WWII started, he put his business career behind him and went back to the military, being the only general office to land on the first day of the D Day invasion.
