New York Times bestselling author and neuroscientist Daniel J. Levitin shifts his keen insights from your brain on music to your brain in a sea of details.

The information age is drowning us with an unprecedented deluge of data. At the same time, we’re expected to make more—and faster—decisions about our lives than ever before. No wonder, then, that the average American reports frequently losing car keys or reading glasses, missing appointments, and feeling worn out by the effort required just to keep up.

But somehow some people become quit

The Organized Mind: Thinking Straight in the Age of Information Overload by Daniel J. Levitin Book Review

Title: Another evolution book.
Date: Reviewed in the United States on November 21, 2018
Review: I was very disappointed that the whole premise of the way the author thinks our mind works is from an evolution over long periods of time. His faith in the process of complete random chance is greater than mine! I find the authors conclusions to be suspect and not sure how this book made any best sellers list. Suckers like me i guess.

Title: Useless

Review: This books read as if I just printed off the first 100 results of various Google searches and then dropped a huge stack of paper in front of you and walked out of the room. No real flow, repetitive. The way the information is presented does not connect with lived day-to-day experience in the slightest, and the book really makes no attempt to connect with the reader at all. I would actually say it is basically unreadable.

Title: If you have the patience, "Thinking, Fast & Slow" is more worth your time
Date: Reviewed in the United States on November 8, 2015
Review: Because we are more inundated with information than any of our ancestors being organized is a far more important trait than ever before. The Organized Mind is pretty much an updated version of Thinking, Fast and Slow for the information age. If you’re looking for the real source text I rec reading TF&S and Csikszentmihalyi’s Flow. Levitin
adds the equivalent of a Wired article on top of the knowledge already in TF&S and Flow.

In the end I got a lot out of this book and it’s going to change how I organize my day to day life. I’m a freelancer(ultimately I’m my own boss) and how I organize my time impacts how much money I take home. Ironically, this book could have been better organized. The author goes on a ton of tangents and the editor should have reigned him in more, but for me it was still worth the read. I rec the kindle version so you can make highlights(and the hardback version is comically large). I hope another author writes a book tackling the issue of staying on task in the Information Age. Social media platforms are designed to distract us and I don't think we are going to make any huge advancements as a species if we’re constantly checking our Twitter feeds.

Title: I feel a lot better about myself having read this book
Date: Reviewed in the United States on February 10, 2019
Review: The author explains how our brains work, how they become cluttered, and why multi-tasking and doing too much at once is not only bad for your brain but overwhelming. By a well know near-scientist who writes for lay people. Could be edited down a bit, but you can read it in short sittings so that is OK. I like his explanation of why I think I am loosing short term memory, but actually I am not. Just seems that way because I try to do too much. Brain overload. Too much electronic communication. Go for the zen.

Title: A state of the art integration of Neuroscience, philosophy and common sense forming an essential Users Guide to the Brain.
Date: Reviewed in the United States on May 22, 2016
Review: The Organized Mind, by Daniel Levitan
Truly an insightful book, using what we know today about cognitive neuroscience, to create a manual for how to use our brains.

Questions that I would ask Dr. Levitan given the chance:
The mind wandering mode is our creative side. The problem, as you wisely point out, is that some of us go into that mode at the most inopportune of times. You advocate the idea of using cards, notes, etc to capture the ideas that come out of these periods of wandering, and when I had them while reading your book, it was fine to stop, capture my ideas, and then come back to the book. (To clarify, 99% of the mind wandering I did while reading your book was based on what I had just read, and how I could incorporate the suggestions and knowledge into my day to day life, and by a matter of course, this meant that it took me much longer to read your book. At first, I thought 'hey, this mind wandering kills my ability to GTD, but then I realized that the whole point of reading your book was to make these mind wandering based connections, and that there was no rush, no time limit, no reason to feel anything but thrilled that the book would lead me down a path of further introspection.

The problem is that the same mind wandering occurs during meetings with others at work….someone says something in a meeting, or we have a discussion, and it sparks a mind wandering event, which leads to ideas I feel compelled to capture. I try to type these on my iPad or iPhone, but that becomes distracting, then I moved to the notepad system you advise, and this is most helpful, except that It contradicts the need for me (as a leader in my drug development group) to be ever present, in a zen-like focus on what is being said and discussed. I feel that I can never attain that zen-like focus on the here and now that is needed for success, because my mind wandering takes over with what feel like critical ideas that I should capture. If I were to attain Zen-like focus, then I fear many of my better ideas (which are triggered by the real time interaction I am having in a meeting or in a one-on-one with someone) would avail themselves. In these situations, I worry that the the Zen-like focus I so eagerly wish to attain (but have done so only on rare occasion) will kill the creative side of me, the part that can think of novel ideas, 'outside of the box'. If I were to set aside time to mind wander deliberately, the same ideas would not come, as they are almost always triggered by the real time interaction I am having with others, hearing their ideas, which trigger a remote memory or thought that then turns into an idea or thought I know I will lose if I don't record it immediately.

So, this is a long way of asking you how one can reconcile the need for zen-like focus (which we know would lead to a higher level of attentiveness, efficiency and immediate enjoyment of life in the moment), with the potential that for some of us at least, such focus appears to hinder or even squelch the ability to create, innovate and think outside of the standard parameters that often constrain us from finding new solutions.

I welcome your thoughts or dialogue on this topic, and, more importantly, thank you for a tour de force work that summarizes and synthesizes what we know about cognitive neuroscience into an accessible users guide to the brain!

Title: Great book, and I found it very interesting
Date: Reviewed in the United States on March 15, 2015
Review: Great book, and I found it very interesting. I found that I already do many of the things that he suggests, but I did learn some new things.

His section on Bayesian statistics, which simply explains how anybody can do better at calculating odds, was well worth reading. For instance, he explores how often medical treatment (medication and/or surgery) can sometimes be statistically a poor choice, where you're more likely to experience unpleasant side effects instead of benefit.

I recommend the book highly, especially if you're interested in thinking more clearly, making better decisions, and being more effective in your daily life.

Title: Lots of information, not so well organized (!)
Date: Reviewed in the United States on May 28, 2015
Review: I enjoyed the book and learned many new ways to organize thinking. The author emphasizes the value of "outsourcing" knowledge outside of ourselves, in notes and other writings. It's okay to have a "junk drawer" where you keep things or ideas that can't be categorized elsewhere.

Ironically, the greatest flaw in the book is its organization - paragraphs and sections seem to just flow into each other, like a stream of consciousness. If only the author more carefully organized the sections according to ideas or other schemes, then it would have been easier to find topics later, and to know what to expect from each chapter. Instead, it seems a bit like a literary junk drawer.
