Title: Go Out And Take Pictures Instead

Review: While Duchemin is widely touted as a "visionary" photographer (especially in his own eyes) I find him to be mostly mundane. He strikes me as the "globe-trotter" type, whose primary skill is "f 5.6 and be there." There are plenty of other self-assignment books that are better; search through Kindle for 50 Photo Projects by Lee Frost for a better approach for far less money.

Perhaps it's a natural consequence of selling lots of books, that many writers fool themselves with their own marketing hype in to believing they know it all. For example, on p. 42 Duchemin states that "It drives me crazy when I hear photographers telling each other that 'this is a portrait lens and that is a landscape lens.'" He then asserts that the context of the image is all that matters.

However, there are actually good reasons that slightly longer focal lengths are good for portraits. This is because shorter focal lengths tend to exaggerate features, like chins and noses, that most people find objectionable. Those of us who have specialized in portraiture during our careers know full well that longer lenses flatter the sitters, who actually pay us. I suppose it would be fair to respond to Duchemin with, "It drives me crazy to hear photographers say that focal length doesn't matter."

Again, on p. 90 he attributes the effect that diagonal lines have on us is due to "visual literacy from motion pictures." Really? What about the use of diagonals by painters for centuries? Whatever the psychological reasons behind the effect of diagonal lines (and other visual conventions) they are far more rooted in our mind's training due to environment, than just movies. Where, in fact, did the movie makers come up with the use of diagonal lines.? Shallow thinking by a know-it-all who can't see beyond his narrow expertise.

In short, there is nothing new here that hasn't been covered many times by others, but without the opinionated Mr. Duchemin's bombastic self-aggrandizement. Go out and take pictures instead.

Title: Really spectacular ideas to help you grow as an artist

Review: I enjoyed this book immensely over the summer. The lesson plans are well thought out, great examples and simple (or at least not overly complicated) to attempt. I've only made my way through less than a third of the book as I have been taking it slow, practicing many of the lessons over periods of weeks at a time. Not only inspiring, the lessons really help you think out of the box and develop new techniques and approaches. I attached a couple of shots that were from Lesson 9 - Intentional Camera Motion.

Title: Just like taking a great workshop, at a fraction of the price

Review: This book is more helpful than most of the online photography workshops I've taken, and for a FRACTION of the price. I adore David duChemin's writing, and actually bought this as an ebook about a year ago, but having it in paper form is just so nice. He also improved it since the ebook version, with more chapters and an even better layout. I love the exercises and his writing. If I were to teach a photography class, I would make all my students buy this book and we'd use it as a text. The best thing about it, is that it works at any experience level. I used it when I was still learning the exposure triangle and just starting to shoot in manual mode. And now that I've been comfortable in manual for a year, I still find this book really inspiring and challenging. You won't be disappointed with this book.

Review: This is a great book! I’m a photography enthusiast and there’s some things I already know, but there’s also much I’ve learned from David’s instruction. I’m not nearly done with the book, but I’m excited to see what more the lessons cover. I especially like that the chapters are short with an assignment after most chapters. He always explains the reasoning behind the details he is trying to teach in a way that is understandable. I highly recommend this book!

Review: As a somewhat an advanced photographer, (professional wedding photographer and went to art school for photography), I did not find much new to be inspired by. It's well written and for someone who has little to mid level experience, I can see this being a useful book. In that regard it deserves 5 stars, but I wish it would have been introduced as being more about fundamentals....playing with depth of field, slow shutter speed, etc.

Title: A great inspiration, beyond technical

Review: I was really delighted by this book. The beauty if it is that it goes almost completely beyond the technical - which you should master by yourself separately from the book - and into the "why" we want to take pictures. The many exercises proposed in the book are all aimed at enabling you to see better, see differently, see more possibilities - hence they really help finding your original way into photography. David is not interested in telling us what's right or wrong, he really focuses on helping us to see it our way. Great read, and great practice (I still have to finish all the exercises in the book!).

Review: This book is great. I was a little skeptical after the low number of reviews and seeing that the author seems to pump out photography books like a factory, but I really like how wide ranging the lessons in this book is, as well as how it's organized. It's arranged into 60 lessons, which is awesome because you can read one and practice it for a while before moving on to the next. You can also skip around to the lessons most interesting to you.

I highly recommend it if you know the basic technique of what changing the aperture/shutter speed/iso do to pictures, but want to step up your photography game.

Title: An Effective Tool for the Learning Photographer

Review: I've been learning my hobby for 30yrs. I studied it during my undergraduate degree and I love to see other people's work and try to work out how they did it. However, I've enjoyed taking one of David's assignments reading his thoughts but then trying for myself to accomplish what he discusses. I really appreciate that he doesn't try to lay out some convoluted set of steps for you to repeat. Rather he presents the concept and then gives just enough direction to focus your efforts but then enough freedom for my vision to drive the actual process.
