Title: Some good, sensible advice

Review: I have only sporadically read some pieces on Benny's blog so I wasn't fully aware of his views on learning a language but after having read quite a few books on learning languages in recent months I have to say this one stood out as one of the better ones.

The book is written in an engaging style and while talking about his approach to learning it didn't feel like I was reading a sermon on the subject. I like his approach to learning which adopts some 'newer' techniques such as Skype and italki along with the old-fashioned method of grabbing a phrase book to get started.

While the title says Fluent in 3 months, which ties in with his blog, I think that anyone reading the book will quickly understand that it is highly unlikely that anyone will be fluent in 3 months in any second language. If people are buying this book thinking that this book contains the secret that make them fluent in 3 months when all other methods have failed then they will be disappointed. However, the book is choc-full of handy tips and I highlighted many, many lines as I read it.

For example some of my highlights include:
* The single ingredient that separates successful language learners from unsuccessful ones is a passion for the language itself. WIthout it you have no reason to persist, with it you will find the time (and he minutes, days, months and years) to put aside to learn your language.
* You need to make time. You only make progress if you set aside the time to allow it t happen. "Ultimately... it is the number of minutes EVERY DAY (my emphasis) you devote to this challenge. These minutes are what truly count."
* Grab a phrasebook and get started, don't hunt around and procrastinate looking for the "perfect" course.
* Focus on one major project at a time. That is, learn one language at a time. (This ties in quite neatly with much of the theory around learning and deliberate practice these days).
* Forget about perfect mastery and aim for conversational level (or even lower) first.
* To realistically expect to make good progress in a language in a short period of time, you have to put at least two hours per day into it and ideally more.
* Flashcards and spaced repetition using Anki has helped him learn languages
* The best way to ensure progress is to be active from the start. Don't make it all about studying; make it about using the language.

And there were many more highlights apart from this short list.

I found the book helpful as a book about learning languages and I think many others would as well. Highly recommended.

Review: I generally think of a book worth reviewing as a coherent body of knowledge bound up in a single theme in a manner that has a well defined structure. This book is not that, so reviewing like a novel or guidebook or a textbook doesn't feel right. This book is a collection of ideas, suggestions, and a healthy dose of the author's own experience on the topic of independently learning a second language as an adult. It's very hard for something like that to ever be complete without turning into a study of some kind, or perhaps a textbook. All of that might sound like a criticism but I don't mean it that way. If this book were a study or a textbook it wouldn't be nearly as good at providing useful recommendations as it is. But since it isn't one of those, and since it's nowhere near all the tips you will ever need it's hard to give it five stars.

This book is a useful addition to planning and pursuing a second language on your own. You might start with this, but you will need other things too and the author points out some items that can be useful. Most of the 'other things' are stuff that you can find from a lot of sources - most of them free and many of them much more comprehensive. The real unique value in this book is the collection of experiences and perspectives that the author has collected in his own pursuit of language learning. One of the hardest things to deal with in independent L2 study is understanding how to motivate yourself and how to set your expectations. Having a collection of observations and advice from someone who is in a good position to provide those things is quite valuable and while many other sources attempt to fill that need I think this book does it better than any of the others I have seen.

Review: While a great deal of this book's contents seems like common sense, so much of it is ignored by language teachers in high school and beyond. I've taken German, Arabic, Mandarin, and French. French was in high school mostly and continued into college, but the other three were college courses I took. Even though I took a semester of German, I still hardly understood even basic grammar and I got so frustrated trying to figure out how to conjugate things that I was totally turned off from the language. Arabic was worse. I couldn't even form a simple sentence, and my vocabulary was limited to "girl", "book", and "student." Mandarin was the same tune, but even worse with the tones. Like Benny, I stayed abroad for three months this summer and came back marginally-conversational in my target language, but nowhere near being able to maintain an average conversation with a native speaker. Despite this setback, I am currently speaking this language with my boyfriend at a comfortable and conversational level after only one week of using Benny's techniques.

Part of what makes learning a language difficult is how we're taught to learn. We're taught that you drill in the information by doing exercises and by writing long vocabulary lists on a variety of subjects, even if you will probably not use these topics anytime soon. The biggest takeaway from this book for me was to make my vocabulary my own, to learn words that I am interested in using and that I use often in my native tongue, such as "video games", "alternative music", and "concert" for my interests, as an example. I have memorized countless vocabulary words in French that I've never even used once, such as "faire du ski" and "le croyant", but it wasn't until recently that I learned "en colère" and "depuis", words that are much more common and that I use more often. This seems so obvious, but is that how most people study language? No.

If you want some tips to guide your self-study, this book is perfect for you. If you want to quickly be able to converse with native speakers in your target language, this book is for you.
