Seven Days in June by Tia Williams Book Review

Title: Couldn’t put it down
Date: Reviewed in the United States on July 8, 2021
Review: A girl and a boy have an intense week together in their senior year of high school. Then it suddenly ends until they both find themselves reunited 15 years later as accomplished authors.

What I liked:
I loved Audre! She was an amazing character. Her and Eva were an awesome pair - and realistic. Kids now are so far ahead of their time. It was cool to have a young perspective.

I liked that the main character was human. She had an issue and it didn’t contribute or take away form the book - it was just a part of the character.

Also, black romance. Gotta love it. Very well written

What I didn’t like:
I hate when characters act like they can’t send a 2 second text. It is never okay to go missing… when you are riding to the airport you can text, waiting for the plane, text; on the plane you can text, riding to the destination, text; in the hospital waiting, text. It’s not the 1800s. I don’t care what happened, theres 2 seconds in all of that to communicate

Title: Realistic characters and situations but
Date: Reviewed in the United States on April 27, 2021
Review: difficult to follow and negative potshots at our country left me with mixed, but strong feelings.

So, I’m in the minority on this one, so far. Author, Tia Williams, uses quite a bit of timeline changes while telling this story and none of them are noted. I found it hard to follow and necessary to reread some sections because of that. Each of the seven days are clearly marked and chapters are uniquely titled beyond that. Would it have been so much to note the time/date changes?

Characters are definitely the strong point of “Seven Days In June”. It does take a while to untangle them in the beginning but read carefully and persevere, it’s worth it. My favorite character, by far is Audre, the precocious 12 year old stole my heart and every scene she was in. Despite her difficult upbringing, she’s a resilient, amazing kid. You’re gonna love her. Eva, her mom, Shane - they all took a lot longer to decide on; well, not mom...

Dialogue is good, mixed with e-mail and texts and all of it is loaded with foul language. The sexual scenes are mildly descriptive and there’s no real violence. There are political snipes that I found offensive, especially Shane making a comment that trashes the American flag. More BLM type comments exist that I could have lived without in a fictional book but as this is about two black authors, so be it. The flag comment, however, is an AMERICAN issue and totally inappropriate, IMO.

All things considered, lots to like about this title and a few concerns; how much they matter is up to you📚

Title: This is what romance with substance looks like
Date: Reviewed in the United States on June 15, 2021
Review: I am beside myself with appreciation for these characters, these words, this book, this author. This story called to me and I felt like I needed to put my entire TBR aside and read it immediately. It was worth putting all other books on hold.

I feel full. Full of love, laughter, warmth, and a dose of reality. This is what romance with substance looks like. When people put romance off for lacking depth, substance, or realness, I will present to them Seven Days in June as a testament to the opposite.

This book is about pain, healing, love without condition. So many one liners that made me laugh and tender moments that touched my heart. I am not big on rereading books, but Genevieve (Eva) and Shane’s story is one I will revisit in the future.

Title: Felt like I was in the story....
Date: Reviewed in the United States on June 7, 2021
Review: Getting to know each of the characters in this book through their feelings was nothing short of amazing. I laughed, I cried, and yet this author left me wanting more. Each person was dynamic in their own right. The conflict surrounding the love that both Eva and Shane possessed for one another was supernatural and could be felt through pages that had nothing but simple text exchanges. I'm not even sure where to begin on young Audre and her high-powered & zestful personality. This book was totally worth the 24hr binge read.

Title: An extremely cheesy quick read
Date: Reviewed in the United States on June 10, 2021
Review: I was a little disappointed in this book just because it was really hyped up. The pop culture references were fun, but overall the characters depth didn’t really land for me. Everything was hastily explained and the ending really wasn’t fully fleshed out until the epilogue, and even then it was very quickly wrapped up. With some of the darker experiences of the characters I expected this to be more well written, instead it felt like I was reading a trendy amateur rom-com. Still an easy read, but there were times I almost set it down for good. A miss for me on the Reese’s book club picks.

Title: A Different Type of Love Story
Date: Reviewed in the United States on June 26, 2021
Review: Loving someone can be complicated but it’s always worth it in the end. This is a story of two very damaged and broken people who found love early on in life but never lost it, and the main characters were described in a was a raw and honest.

Tia Williams wrote a quirky, witty, love story about family trauma, what it means to have an invisible disability, addiction, mental health, foster care, and how people have to give themselves permission to be loved. Eva and Shane, the main characters, are both famous writers (she, for her Twilight style series, and he, for his brooding series) had a brief (one week)teenage romance 15 years earlier, that changed the course of their lives. Eva is the divorced mom to a precocious 12year old daughter Audre, who attends a prep school where she counsels her classmates as if she were a professional therapist. Shane is the elusive darn near reclusive author who disappears from the spotlight but makes a surprise appearance at a local NY speaking engagement, much to the shock of everyone in attendance, including Eva. This is we’re the wild ride begins.
The story shifts from the past to the present, but not in a weird and annoying way. It’s done so that we get the full scope of why Eva and Shane are tragic people, broken people, who are truly unique. I really enjoyed the setting (Trendy NY) and the modern cultural references (music, reality tv, fashion). Overall, it was a true love story.
